F 20 Flywheel Removal

I need to remove the flywheel. The engine is out and the big nut has been removed. Now I see something that looks like a dowel pin, between the crankshaft and the flywheel, that is drilled and tapped to 3/8" NC. Do I need to get this dowel out to remove the flywheel, and how is the pin removed? Thanks.

You probably won't have much luck pulling the pin, and either way you'll need to buy or improvise a puller for the flywheel. Here's a pic of one I made up when I was like 16. You pull the pilot bearing and rest the nut inside the crankshaft. The bars lay against the bellhousing and then I tighten the nuts on the threaded rods. Ugly but it works.

Bruce, the pin will come out with the flywheel
I used angle iron across bellhouseing drill some holes and treaded rod. They are not to bad to pull but putting back on is another story.

the pin is easy to remove if you have a slide hammer. It has internal fine threads. I made an adapter for my slide hammer by welding a fine thread bolt that fits the pin to a nut that screws on my puller. They come right out.
I have a gear puller that fits the flywheel through the two holes, Most people make their own pullers, I think nebraska kirk made one with a hydraulic jack in it.

There is no need to pull that pin before pulling the flywheel, the pin will stay in the flywheel when you pull it off. If I remember right, the pin threads are 3/8-16 NC

doesn't matter if the pin left in or not. If that sucker is all nasty greasy and oily it might pop off pretty easy. It's those clean dry ones that have usually been a real sunnuvabeach in my experiences. Some come easy, others make up for them and really make you work to get them off.
