IH WD-9 Compression Lever

As I have been in the process of restoring my WD-9, I cleaned up the linkage for the compression lever (LH side of steering column). Previously, it dropped down to the diesel compression when the throttle lever was moved in the diesel range. It no longer does this until the throttle is all the way into the WOT position for the diesel. Is there an adjustment that needs to be made? If so, where is that at? My assumption is that as soon you switch from gas to diesel, it should automatically drop the compression lever to the diesel cycle, but maybe it was suppose to be done manually. Thanks!

there is no automatic change over as the wd40 has. once its warmed up on gas then you have to manually swith it to diesel and give it some throttle.

That is true to a point. I think you would pull the throttle to initiate the change, but the decomp lever would do it's thing automatically. That is only somewhat true with the letter series gas start diesels.

IIRC the manual says that it is a failsafe so that you don't run the throttle up without changing over. My MD will not open the decomp lever completely. The adjustments are all in the service manual. It is a simple 15 step process. It starts with the decomp valves in the head. It then moves to all the stuff behind the carb. Then it jumps across to "the diesel side" (as I like to call it) and all that friction disc area. Then it goes up the rods and your done.

I do not have a copy of the service manual? Would it be possible to send a copy of those specific pages my way? I didn’t remove any of the valves behind the carb or the friction disc on the “diesel side.” All that I did was use engine degreaser and steel brush to clean up those areas. Is it possible that by just cleaning these areas could have reduced the friction enough to cause it to not changeover correctly?

Your tractor is fine. Yes the built up grease for some reason created
enough resistance to allow you to automatically switch to diesel
with just the throttle, but under normal, and even once you go
through it with the book you WILL HAVE TO USE THE
DECOMPRESSION LEVER to switch to diesel no if ands or buts about
it. The book is probably $25 and if you are serious about fixing
your tractor go and buy one.

yes you need the manual, as the friction control needs a pull of 75 lbs.tension for the adjustment. if you got it oily then this may be your problem .it is quite an intensive adjustment for the whole set up. once warmed up on gas. the compression release lever is to be pulled first.this switches it to diesel mode. then you give it some throttle. i dont know where this automatic stuff is from.

Just buy the manual. I can't see how you could restore a tractor without one. There are a lot of adjustments and torque specs in the service manual. Go to B inder B ooks. There books are the best I have seen. Try the ones on eBay for me. They are a lot cheaper, but I hear the quality is hit or miss. My BB WD-9 manuals aren't as good as my H set.

Edit - I changed my mind. I bought the knowledge what do you have in return? I could use a seat post, swinging drawbar guide strap, hose holder attatched to the oil filter, unaltered dash, left foot plate, lights. There are a few more, but they are probably over budget.

Both the MD and WD-9 manuals are as follows
1. Move the compression release lever down all the way. See Illusts 4 or 5
2. Immediately move the engine speed control lever rearward enough to keep the engine from stalling.
...

I just got done reading the same thing in my owner's manual. I believe everything is working correctly now whereas before it was sticking. We'll see how it behaves after paint.

I have found no reason to purchase a service manual thus far as I am only re-painting the tractor. Besides, everyone on this forum has been a great help! :D

(quoted from post at 14:58:46 02/28/12)... i dont know where this automatic stuff is from.

As found on page 50 at the end of the third full paragraph (right above Adjusting the Starting Control Mechanism) of the WD-9 service manual:
...The shape of lever "L" is such that it still contact lever "D," which is connected to the compression release lever, if the throttle is opened when the engine is operating on gasoline. This is a reminder to trip to the Diesel cycle before opening the throttle.

The typos are actually in the manual like that. I didn't want to get accused of tampering with evidence.
