Water pump question on CaseIH 495

Had water push back up through radiator cap the other day while using the tractor. Let it cool down and was fine until it got hot enough again. Took out thermostat and filled with water then started it to see if water was moving through the system - no movement. So a bad water pump was assumed. I removed the water pump, but I declare I can't "see" anything wrong with it. No chipped/broken fins, it wasn't leaking, bearing doesn't seem to have any play in it. Has always ran just fine and had good anti freeze in it. Is it possible that the pump is bad even though it doesn't look to be? Any suggestions?

One more thing, i have not seen it form bubbles or overflow when cranking it. Radiator fins were fairly dirty so am cleaning them while off, but still wouldn't explain the lack of apparent movement of water with thermstat out would it? Gauge is the oem gauge and it sometimes does not work I don't think. I may temporarily install a mechanical gauge with temps, reinstall water pump and radiator and see what happens. Not real sure as to how to test for clogs - any ideas there?

Makes me wonder if there is a crack in the head or slevee , that is maybe exspanding when hot, and the combustion chamber is puting air pressure in the coolant. The 495/and IH484 are the same tractor and are prone to electoliss or cavitation. Please excuse my poor spelling.

How could I test for that condition? No coolant in oil and no oil in coolant. But I am assuming this would be a compression issue not cooling/lubrication.

No test that I can think of that dose not involve trearing into the motor. You said it has just happened, so if indeed there was a crack, oil and coolant would both mix with time and use. Is your coolant good for -30F? If the anti freeze in the rad was slush, it could buble out the over flow , But this would only happen if tractor was use for say short periods of time, like ten minutes to move a round bale or such.

Not sure of the -30 question but we haven't been down to the +20's here in SC for a while - been a warm winter. Still doesn't explain lack of apparent water movement does it?

Well when it first happened I was plowing (under heavy load) and I noticed the hood wet around the cap and water apparently coming from under the cap. Whenever I removed the cap (later after it cooled) I put water in until it was at the bottom of the neck. Started tractor. Ever so slowly, the water level got higher and higher until it was trickling over the lip. Never had it gushing out or bubbles, just slowly rising. Now it had to have had a bit more than a trickle of force when it came out when in use, but then it would have been hotter and under pressure too.

Well I hate to sound dumb, but water drained out whenever I pulled lower hose off. Can't honestly say by memory from last night whether all of it came out. What is the best "method" to determine if it is plugged? Put water in top and see if it comes out bottom? Not meaning to come across simple-minded but at times I feel pretty simple minded with these head scratchers.

Hi my brother had a similar problem on his 454, same as 495. Had to have rad steam cleaned as the cores were clogged with scale. One clue was the lower rad hose was collapsing from suction from water pump at high RPM.

Even if the water will drain through, it might be plugged off enough the limit the flow, thus forcing the water out the cap.

I'd get the rad checked by a rad place. If you have the water pump off, might not hurt to replace it with new anyways if you've gone this far.
