Seized or not

I was told there were ways to find out if your motor was seized . This one a 1953 Super C and it has been sitting outside for a couple of years now and I could use any and all advice. Thank You!!

with the transmision in neutral:
if the starter or the crank wont turn the motor over it is likely seized.
if you remove the starter and the fan belt try to turn the flywheel with a pry bar and it dosent move it is probley seized.
jack up the back wheels, put it in first gear and try to turn the rear wheel.

There are a number of way to check if the engine is locked up. Of course setting a battery in it and hitting the starter button is one way.Or grabbing the fan if the fan belt is good and tight and trying to move the crank shaft is another way which I use a lot. Or you can try to turn it over with the hand crank if you have one. I could go on and on but lets just say an engine unless diesel is easy to turn by hand. Ya your not going to spin it like the starter does but hey your human and it is not and has a lot more guts then you do

I have yet to see one that you can turn with a fan belt. Old said if your belt is good and tight. I think he meant good and too tight.

Put it in high gear and rock it. If the fan moves you win (sort of)

If it had a cover over the exhaust it may not be that bad. If it is outside in a high rainfall area there is water in the transmission/rear end. Before you crank the engine remove the drain plug under the rear axel and drain the water off. As soon as you have oil coming out put it back in. You do not want to mix the oil and water as it will make a very big mess. (The reason I know is because I did not drain the water off and I had a mess.) You probably will want to replace the rear end oil at some point in the future.

if the exhaust pipe has been left uncovered for any lenght of time thats a guarantee for a seized engine. also you can pull the plugs and have a look in cyl's with flashlight, any sight of rust and your in trouble.

You funny I have more then 20 engines on the place right now and I can turn all of them over by hand by way for the fan belt you just have to be smart enough to know how to hold the belt with one hand and then turn/pull the fan with the other. Been doing that now since I was 15 year old or less and have never had any trouble turning one that is not locked up that way other then a diesel. Unless of course it has a fan clutch like my Chev truck has. Do that is how i tell if an engine is locked up when buying a fence row tractor and have only had one that fooled me and it has a locked up water pump and that was on an M that I have

Remove the plugstheir condition can tell some of the condition. Next look in the hole at the walls and if they are rusty pull the head as you will need to replace with new ones.

Just when I was thinking the world was going to "heck in a hand-basket" some people come along, do something nice and ruin my whole perspective. Thanks, so much to everybody, for there helpful advice. I'm an old man who is going to use a young man's phrase, "you guys rock". Have a great day all.

Rule of thumb:Before you do anything, remove the oil drain plug and catch some in a qt. jar. (Not the pit cock valves, the drain plug). Let it stand and observe. If you have no water, you should be able to free it up without dumping a fortune into it. If you have green water on the bottom the block is cracked or the head gasket is blown. Clear water is rain water that came in through the stack. This can be bad, but usually will mean only one cylinder is stuck. I have freed up several tractors and I find that an oak block and a 10 lb sledge works the best.
