Early H PTO questions

I bought another parts H this week, this one is a 1940 SN 22435. The engine is very stuck, and I have never seen a hack job this bad on a hood. It is too bad because the rest of the hood is very nice. This H has a 1-1/8" flat back PTO and I am wondering if this is the first H pto or the second. All other Hs I have had have had the third PTO with the projecting housing and the spline engagement. Can I pull this type of PTO out of the back of the tractor in the same way as a late one or are there things to watch out for? Are these early PTOs and countershafts desired by colllectors at all? I know they are not good for actually using for work. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Zach, that PTO is the one that I was looking for when I bought the one from you last year and then I had to buy the intermediate shaft from you later on to install it remember? as I recall they are extremely rare and not a very good PTO Functional but I am told they break easily
Mike
P.S. the one I wanted was going onto my 39 H

Zach, That is the second version of pto. The first version was a round housing that was flat. They did not have the ears off to the side to mount the pto shield like the one you have here.

What makes you say the early PTOs are not very usefull?

That PTO is exactly like the one on my 1940 H and it has been powering a 72 inch belly mower for at least 12 years now with absolutely NO problems.

Zach,

I'd might be interested in that pto when you get to pulling parts.. I don't so much need the shaft as much as I need the "housing".. I have a 1940 H dad and I are going to restore, but someone over the years broke the ears off that hold the pto shield on.. To this point I haven't found one locally. I have a "housing" from a later tractor with the larger shaft, but have been told it won't work.

Zachary the splined countershaft didn't start until serial 45614. Late PTO started serial # 118000. In between the two another type was used that can be replaced with the late type without changing the counter shaft. You have the first type used from 501 to 45613.

Zach you have the second type pto. the only difference is on the real early ones the part that hooks onto the rod you pull on is made of round stock instead of the flat one that your picture shows.

(quoted from post at 10:40:33 02/27/12) That's just what I needed to know so I wouldn't damage anything
pulling it out. Thank you.
Zach

I went outside to double check. I didn't want to be the guy that created a bull pinion gear carrier fiasco.

Here is mine.

That PTO looks exactly like the one on my '42 H, ser. 100,xxx. Are the shields hard to find? Mine is missing. The only PTO work that the tractor(my grandfathers) ever did was to run a #27V mower and a New Idea corn picker on a 100 acre farm, never had a problem with it.

Zach I will try to get it right but things get confusing on the early tractors. Main thing to remember is the notched counter shaft was used to serial 45613 unless tractor was equiped with low low gears then to 72773. Splined counter shaft was used after those serial numbers. Two types were used for the notched shaft and depending when the PTO attachment was installed 501 to 45613 could have the last type for the notched shaft or early type.
But 501 to 9535 used a different PTO attachment than 9536 to 45613 did when they first came out.
Two types were used for the splined countershaft tractors. Flat housing type 45614 to 117999 and the last type 118000 up. Everything is not black and white when it comes to the early PTO units though. IH made several changes in the parts for them along with several upgraded parts that didn't look the same as original ones. Eventually IH quit making parts for the early type and the latest type was used for replacements along with whatever parts were needed to install unit.
