removeing steering wheels

On my 400, I used a pickle fork on the backside with just enough raps with a hammer to hold it in place. Juiced up what I could with PB blaster, used the nut back on the treads and smacked it hard with a 4lb hammer and big brass punch. Took awhile.
 
Well if ya don't want to mess up any paint with heat I use a ten ton puller , sometimes the will come off ok then there are the one's that come off with a bang.
 
The suggestion on the HOME page on here is pretty good. Take a ball bearing that fits the inside of a nut that will thread on the steering shaftand weld it into the nut.(You need a BIG ball bearing that WILL NOT pass thru nut.)Thread it onto the shaft all the way untill the ball bearing bottoms out on the shaft.Smack the crap out of the end of the ball bearing with a hammer.If it doesnt loosen up,apply a little heat to the steering wheel hub and hit it again!
 
When I purchased my H, it came with a new steering wheel that the former owner never got around to installing. So, I simply cut off the old wheel and installed the new one. If you will be doing the same, just use a hacksaw or some other cutting tool and go at it.
 
Lots of heat, the biggest gear puller you can rig up, lots of PB blaster, and put the torque to it!! Re-put the heat to it, re-torque it, and after a few days it'll pop loose.
 
My letter series ones have come off easy enough with a gear puller. My 460 has a tapered shaft. When the puller would not budge it I used a propane torch, the wheel popped off and flew several feet, glad I wasn't in the way.
 
Are you replacing the wheel or reusing it?
If you have a new one just cut the old one parallel to the shaft with a sawsall down to where the slot is. Knock it off . Done in two minutes.

And then spend the next several days filing down the mushroomed end and then try to find a threading die to cut new threads so the nut will fit once again.

Yes, I have done it that way myself, so speaking from experience I will strongly suggest to NOT do ANY hammering on the end of the shaft. It will only serve to create even more work for you.

Best suggestion yet :lol: I would probably use the die grinder or angle grinder and a cuttoff wheel. Maybe cuttoff wheels spin too fast for a die grinder too :roll:
 
There's no "temper" in the steering wheel. You don't want the metal hard and brittle on a steering wheel.

Besides you're not heating it red hot unless you really want it to come off on the first try.
