temp gauge and ign wire lenght question?

hey fellas, 2 questions, on the wire to my temp gauge you have this spring like wire that wraps around the main wire for the full lenght, what purpose does that serve.
also, is the lenght of plug wires important. im cutting my new wires alittle shorter and more direct from the dist cap to the plugs?

Mike - The temp gage sensor lead is a capillary - a soft copper tube with a very small internal bore. The spring wire wrap serves as armor to protect the delicate capillary tube.

Spark plug wire length is inconsequential - shorter (or longer) than original works fine. Just don't make them so short as to cause sharp bends which will crack and ruin the insulation over time.
