could some one give me specs. on ring and pinion backlash and end play. I have top off looking for a knocking noise and backlash seems excessive.

Hello Dick,
There is a procedure to follow setting up bevel gears and pinions and described in the Farmall A book in detail. I think they are the same or at least similar.
Per the 'A' book backlash should be .005 - .007 measured at the tightest point. There should not be any end play of the pinion or the bevel gear carrier. Hope this helps

I doubt if the noise is cause by excessive backlash. Anyway you don't want to mess with the backlash of existing gears. Any adjustment will result in the gears running on different surfaces and any noise will become louder.

I have the oil out and axles out there is two inches of crud in bottom of case. gear backlash is in excess of .075 bearing end play about .010 nothing looks damaged.

I would look in the trans gears not the ring and pinion. We had a noise in our H it was one of the speed gears missing part of a tooth.
