H Crank Handle, and A Charging Problem

I noticed on pages 60/61 of Guy Fay's "Letter Series" book the new H had the crank handle stored on the shaft, with a cotter pin holding it in place. My handle and my shaft both have cotter pin holes. Betcha that was the one official place to store it, and with electric start a man just didn't need it.

Now my problem; my 1950 H will not charge unless I jumper from the spade terminals on the Delco 10SI alternator, to hot. Then it charges just fine. But without the jumpers, she won't charge.
What do I have to fix / replace?
Thanks, guys.

On that 10SI one of those small terminals (voltage sense) is jumpered direct up to the big main output stud so the internal voltage regulation circuit knows what charge rate to maintain. The other small terminal is used for excitation voltage and usually wires to the ignition switches IGN terminal which becomes hot when the ignition is switched ON (or to input side of ignition coil) via an in line series diode or resistor to prevent the ignition coil from backfeed.

Is yours wired that way?? If not I wouldnt expect it to work properly

I have no idea how or even if it's wired internally. There are just the two spade terminals sitcking up on the rear of the 10-SI. Whe I put on a jumper wire from the inboard terminal to the hot stud on the back of the alternator, she charges nicely. But she doetn's keep doing that after the jumper is gone. My question is, what should I do??

George - Wire you alternator per diagram in the link and you'll be good to go.

"Storing" an H crank by pinning it to the cranking shaft extension is a sure way to bend or snap off the crank first time the front of the tractor meets a fence row!

When I brought home my Super H I found the crank tucked between the left side frame rail and block (ie. beneath the carburetor). It's an excellent place to store the crank - can't fall out yet is readily available.

Here is a link to the wonderful wiring diagrams put together by a kind person who understands electricity. I found them very helpful when I was trying to wire my H which has a magneto and an 10SI alternator, which is not the most normal combination.

Thanks, guys, I will study onthis. I'll try the wires in the No. 5 sketch, although I really believe electricty is all done with smoke and mirrors.
