Magneto timing on a Regular

Im putting the mag back on a regular and I am not sure how to time it with the engine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time Mark.

Mark, # 1 TDC crank pin should be horizontal.
Install mag with rotor pointing to # 1 post on cap. #1 post is 1 o'clock. That will get it going. You will have to see how it runs and tweek it till you get the sweet spot. oldiron29

Take the valve cover off and roll the engine over until it's at TDC by the mark AND both valves for #1 are closed, reinstall your magneto so that the rotor is pointing where #1 should be. Remember TDC on the flywheel will be when it's at the end of the exhaust stroke/beginning of the intake or at the top of compression.

Mark,The way I do it is put my finger in #1 hole untill I feel compression than remove your side cover and watch your piston come to TDC,then proceed from there.Fine tuining your mag with your mag drive is somewhat trial and error.I like to getit set to the point that you start it in the retarded position and when it starts move your timing lever to the advanced position and you hear the motor smooth out

if you would have said rod inspection cover that would have made more sense , as it sounded like your removing the whole front cover. but you still dont know if your on compression by just watching the rod. if i have the valve cover off then no need to remove plugs.
