1586 update

I am replacing the o-rings and bushing on the draft sensing on the bottom of the 3 point due to leaking. Took the PTO off - when I drained the oil it was very clear - however the bottom of the casing did have about a handfull of sand sized shavings (probably about 1/2-3/4 cup) along with a small sheared key - I called the previous owner - he said they've replaced the park paw and couldnt find a few parts as well as the PTO about every 5 years (used on silage blower) and the bull gears went out when under warrenty (I'd think IH would have cleaned her out good - but the rest was on farm service)- I believe the shavings came whent the pto went as I can see the shaft wore into the housing - other than that she looks good - original owner said that the bottom of the case has never been drained. (even with drain plug she wont completely empty) I'm thinking of putting her back together and running her - changing filter and see what happens. The filter had some metal in it but not alot- wasnt plugged by any means - but hadnt been changed in a while - but atleast it was a C-IH filter not just an IH :) I have no rear end noise or suspision of bearing failure in the tranny or rear. I'm getting the manual in the mail this week - hope it shows how to tension the torsion bar for the bottom links - what does that pump on the pto do? - nearest I can tell it only supplies fluid to the PTO unit.

Tim,

I would wash it out good and reassemble. Might use a magnet and reach in areas where you can't reach by hand or see for more cleaning. Could the "key" piece be part of a pto spline? Put the torque tube back as it will fit. The adjustment, if needed, will be on the top of the arm that is bolted onto the tube inside. The arm should bolt to a flat spot on the tube and fit the same as it did before.
