IH 300 Utility Hard To Shift

Hello All-
Recently became proud owner of IH 300 Utility that I inherited from my uncle bought new in 1956. Since getting the tractor with a little TLC tractor now will start with one crank with hand crank and runs smooth, (not preferred method starter now works fine.) The tractor is very hard to shift. The Tourque Amplifier is not operational. I remember him telling me that it was two expensive to repair. At this point in his life he no longer used the tractor for hard work as he had for decades bailing hay. After some research I have read that this may be the cause of the hard shifting. I would appreciate all input on this issue. I have attempted the adustments to T/A as instructed in manual with no change. Looking forward to your responses.

Have checked it but can certianly get the manual out and do it again. Much simpler than what I was talking about. Thank You for idea, will get back to you

Pedal on tractor different than one in manual. Clutch arm goes straight forward and mounts on bushing right below starter. Has adjustment set bolt on top. T/A operating lever mounts outside of clutch arm on same bushing. Will clearances be same on this clutch pedal set-up?

Have you tried pulling the TA lever back and checking if it shifts any easier? If she shifts easier then you need to adjust the TA linkage. You might need to tighten up the adjustments of the TA linkage to compensate for wear in the linkages.

Thank you for your response. Yes pulling the lever back has been attempted. It is a knowm bad T/A. I adjusted T/A to totally release possible pressure on that clutch and it appeared to help a bit. All T/A fittings were backed out as far as they could be. Seems over time as T/A was failing all adjustments were backed out as far as they could be to get all the life there was out of it. I am hopeing that now that all is loosened up over time will shift easier until I can split tractor and repair correctly, (new T/A installation).
Thank you for replying.

That sounds ok can you see the throw-out bearing. Sometimes the linkage on the bearing gets mess up and when the clutch is pushed in it doesent release the clutch disc and that can cause a drag on the main shaft making shifting hard.

Just finished rebuilding the T/A on my 340 because of shifting problems. After splitting the tractor found the T/A clutch was the problem. It was rusted so bad that that it would not release, no matter what kind of adjustment was made. Ended up putting in a new (rebuilt) T/A clutch and replaced the main clutch disc. Shifts great now, but still need to make adjustments on the T/A clutch. Hope this helps

Interior rust is something that I had not considered and you are probably on the right track. Tractor set for years outside with minimum use. It had aquired so much moisture in both fluid reservior that when first checked levels they were full to top, was like spoiled milk. Cleaned and changed but with T/A not working I suppose those parts wouldnt be moving correcly anyway. No way to look at it without splitting tractor is there? No inspection plate?

If your question is directed to me (Gene F), I didn't know what my problem was(bad T/A clutch) until I split the tractor.

My 340 did have an inspection plate, but there was no way to get at it because the steering housing/arms were sitting on top of it. Also the cavity where the T/A clutch sits is dry (no oil), which means it has a greater opportunity to rust, especially if the tractor has been sitting a while.

Gene and Gene F-

Thank you for all your assistance. When the funds come available I plan on splitting the tractor and seeing what I can find, By loosening the linkage the shifting is getting easier. Been doing blade work with it in fairly small area with lots of shifting. It is amazing what you can find when you actually use a piece of machinery. For instance tractor has down pressure. Problem is manual doesnt tell you that you have to put the 1 inch pin in for the tractor to actually have down pressure. Wish Uncle was still here to answer all these questions, I am so glad that there is a site such as this with people such as yourselves willing to share there knowledge!

You might try looking for his original operator's manual for this tractor, they come in handy for lubrication points & intervals, should also explain how the fast hitch works etc. If you can't find it Binder books has them.
Ebay has them also but watch out for the prices, some are way up there.
