460 utility steering gear

I bought a international 460 high utility a few years ago and haven't done much with it until now. I am having trouble with the steeering box. When I turn the wheel back and forth, I can see the steering wheel and shaft move up and down about an inch before it actually begins to move the steering arms. There must be something worn or loose inside. I was hoping someone out there may have had the same problem and could "steer" me in the right direction. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like shaft nut is loose next to steering valve, should not move that much. Had a 460 diesel with D301 from a 715 in it, steering wheel would move up and down maybe 1/4 inch, worked OK.

if power steering it should move about .2 inches.
If manual not at all. Parts are hard to find, and must be NOS. If it turns out to be unfixable, Jackson Power Steering can make it better than new. Jim

You don't say wether you have power steering or not. I have a '59 460 utility with manual steering and a loader so the steering has a lot of slop in it at every component. I contacted Jackson Power Steering to see if they have a conversion unit for it and they do not. So it seems that finding NOS parts or machine shop work are my only options.
