Farmall A final drive bearing

So I tore into the left final drive on the "A" today after removing the pan and finding almost tar in it. I decided I would replace the axle seal while I was at it. Man, is that a pain on this sucker. The actual work that should be involved in it is not bad but the gear that is attached to the axle shaft was darn near froze on. Ruined the retaining bolt trying to get the shaft out (took the dot off the top and deformed the top enough that you can't use a socket, need to take a wrench on selective sides).

The outside bearing is the same way. Before I ruine the outside cover plate trying to get this bearing off I just want to see if the number on the bearing is universal. It says 1210 on the bearing. If that is universal I think I will try to cut the bearing off (even though it rolls nice and smooth) in order to save the cover plate. Is the number universal?

I got my new bearings for mine at Carquest. I will try and find the Car Quest number and you should be able to take that to any parts store and they can cross it for you.

You need a manufacturer. Get the bearing number out of the parts book or the CaseIH web site and take it to any bearing place and they can cross it for you.

I don't know if you have a press or not, but you can try doing it like this...it worked great for me. You can walk it off gradually and I didn't have a problem with either side.

WOW!!!! How did that idea pass by me (using bolts to walk it off). I usaully come up with a solution like that, guess I can give myself the blonde award for the day :)

According to my parts info, the outside axle bearing on the Farmall A is IH number ST 278. I have an old IH bearing cross reference book and the ST278 number crosses to a New Departure 10690 V. The 1210 number is also mentioned, so I suppose the bearing you have is a New Departure and they are out of business, but most bearing houses can cross with old ND numbers. The inside axle bearing on the A is IH number ST205A and crosses to SKF 76491H. There are also ND and Rockwell numbers listed for that bearing, but SKF is still in business and I've had luck just looking up SKF numbers Motion Industries website. Hope this helps.

Uh oh, we can all see the failed plan A over there to the right!

You should be more careful when taking pictures.
