Starter on an H

Going to be replacing a starter on an H soon, the type without the switch on it, any tips that would make anything easier? Someone was saying something about some kind of insulators, where are they located and are replacements available?

Don't know what someone is talking about insulators, etc but changing the starter on an H couldn't be easier. Remove the battery cable, the 2 bolts holding the starter and pull it out. Reverse that to put it back. You may want to consider where the one you put back is made. Many are now made in China and I haven't had any luck with them. My last one I bought from NAPA and they say theirs was rebuilt here in the US. I haven't had problem so far.

I just had to replace the starter on my M just a couple of weeks ago...Charlie is right, if you buy a new one it is most likely made in china and I have heard that they are nothing but junk. I would suggest that you find your local auto electrical repair shop and have it rebuilt. I had mine rebuilt and converted to 12 volt, it cost me $125 which is still cheaper than buying a junk chinese starter and you will be supporting local business!!!

I was told to never just put a wrench on the thin nut on the electrical cable post, and crank on it, because the post is connected to internal wiring. Make sure you put another wrench on the thin nut below it, use the two wrenches, and that way youwon't turn the post and break the electrical connection.

Why not rebuild the old one? Or get one from a salvage yard?
The original ones are much better quality than today's replacements.

The insulators would be on the power stud and we normally replace them when rebuilding a starter if field coils are removed. Like others have said, do not allow that stud to turn when tightening the cable down, hold onto the cable so it cannot turn. If the stud turns it breaks the solder loose and some times even the ends of the fields. Only good way to repair it then is to remove fields and stud. Took me a while to develop a good method of resoldering them as it seems no one around here fixed them, replaced starter.
