Planter Question?

Does anybody have any expirence with an Allis Chalmers 333 air no-till planter? I saw one for sale on craigslist not too far from home, I'm thinking of checking it out. It is set up as 11 row 15" for beans, called a "Splitter". I assume it probably could be set up as 6-30" for corn then too, right? Like the newer twin line planters and such? Is that Allis planter any good? Are parts available? I'd like such a planter in my barn, in the event I can rent a few acres and farm someday. Thanks for the advice! -Andy

They were really not a bad planter. To keep those air drives going you will want an ALTERNATOR that puts out in excess of 100 amps. Generator equipped tractor will need to be converted to an alternator if that tractor draws planting duty. You need the AC current to keep those electric fans running evenly. You may want to run a couple group 31 batteries in the tractor to have some reserve when you run low throttle reducing alternator output. Supposedly they ran odd bearings for the disc openers but I don't know if that was my wacky neighbor just finding a reason not to do the job. The last time I heard other parts were available but were EXPENSIVE.
