eletric trailer brakes

Hey guys, was hauling a load of hay tonight and the drivers side front axle on trailer started to smoke. The hubs are greased regular and it smelt like burning brakes. Any ideas what would be causing the brakes to drag? All the other wheels were fine. And even when turning the brake controler all the way down it still did it. Any input would be great. 5he trailer is a 2010 pequea g12 gooseneck that I bought new thanks. Jim

Jim,

Perhaps that's the only brake that grabs? Or perhaps there's an issue with that brake mechanism? It may be too tight, or hung, or lodged.

I am sure you have thought of these items, but chimed in nontheless.

I had a trailer that the brake lining separated from the shoes on 3 out of the 4 wheels. The lining was bonded and it sat for a little while. From sitting the moister got to the shoes and the lining just pealed off and got stuck between shoes and drums.

Mine did the same thing.

I forgot, if you are near Janesville, WI you should buy the drums from me. I bought four drums and only needed two last time I did my trailer brakes.

Was driving my dad's f150 and one of the rear brake started smoking. Turned out the rear wheel bearing went bad and the axle went up and caused the drum to rub on the brakes. What are the chances the wheel bearing might be loose?

To check my brakes, I'll set them heavy when the trailer is empty and see if all wheels slide on gravel.

(quoted from post at 20:34:35 02/14/12) What size drums, for what axles? Email is open.

They were the standard Dexter drums. Something like a 14" 8 bolt. I will check when I go do chores.

as was suggested a bad bearing could cause the drum to contact the shoe,but....a siezed adjuster,an adjuster set too tight, a siezed activation arm, a bad magnet,a bad wire..could be one of many factors..get the drum off, clean everything up and lube all areas that have a moving part or need to move with anti sieze. A bad magnet will be bluish in color from over heating, the face of the drum should be shiny indicating that the magnet has put drag on the actuation arm..most problems I find are rusted siezed parts that will not allow proper application and release of the brake shoes.
