Live Hydraulics on a M?

I'm redoing an M and will be putting live hydraulics on it. I all ready did this once but lost the tractor in a fire. So I know to change the cam gear, put a front cover from a SM or newer, ect.

My question:

What would be a better?
1)an original pump off a 400,450,SM...
2)a m-w pump
3)a new m-w type pump
4)a new original type pump

Your opinions....

I used the original pump off of a 300 on my H, and it looks/fits real nice. You may not need to change out the front cover and gears if you M is new enough. There should be a serial number break when the M and super shared covers.

D Slater indicates the following:
If your tractor is a 1950 there's a engine serial # break on the front cover and plate to the correct bolt pattern for the IH pump. If its older the bolt pattern is different. If newer the same bolt pattern as IH pump. On some M front covers though the pump shafts with snout for a hour meter drive gear will contact inside of cover just before a flush bolt up. This is just a guess on engine serial # break without looking it up, but I seem to remember it may be 228050.

My M is a '47 and yes I have done one before. I'm asking what pump is a better way to go. Would any pump be a higher volume or provide more pressure? While a used pump would have some wear, would a new pump be much of an advantage? Was the M-W any higher volume or pressure than SM/400 type?

You don't need to change out the front cover or cam gear for an M&W pump. They were designed to fit the older style cover.

The problem with an M&W pump is, you're stuck with what you get. If you buy a junk pump, there's no fix to it. No parts.

Buying a used IH pump is also a huge risk, because you can't fix these either. Once it's wore out, it's scrap.

The only way a used pump will work is if you can find a salvage yard with a supply of them, and work out a deal where you can keep trying them until you find a good one.

Either way, you could very easily end up out hundreds of $$$ with nothing but a lump of scrap to show for it.

Safest bet is a NEW IH pump. Not cheap, but after 2-3 dud used pumps, about the same money.
