I'm working on putting a 240 engine in a Farmall A, I have everything worked out using the 240 water pump but I had to fabricate a new outlet with a thermostat for the head. My question is: is it necessary to pipe in the bypass or could I do without it. I'm afraid that if I don't include the bypass the pressure could cause a gasket to blow somewhere. Thanks for any advice.

The bypass keeps the water circulating in the engine when the thermostat is closed to avoid hot spots. It's a good idea to have it.

Thanks for the input, TJ. I was thinking about building pressure and never gave a thought to hot spots around the sleeves. Looks like I need to get my plumbing tools together. Thanks again.

The thermostat bypass should be no more than 1/4"diameter. If there is more than that the tractor will not get to operating temp. If the thermostat is placed on the head like it is in most 2000 and many older engines (of all types), the thermostat bypass need only be that tiny loose stud in the thermostat. But if your design has both a water pump bypass of about 1/2" hose and a small thermostat bypass, all is well.
If you are talking about a water pump bypass that does allow water to circulate in the block. it is important. Jim

Yes, You will be a plumber now.
Pressure is not the issue with this.
Besides letting the water circulate in the block to avoid hot spots it also gets the water up to temperature faster, kind of a water temperature balancing idea and in cars gives you heat faster.
