replacing Air cleaner filter material

The air cleaner filter material on my farmall 504 diesel is clogged up really bad so i got some new filter material. But the air cleaner does not seem to dismantal enough to allow for easy changing of the filter material. I have to pull the old stuff out the bottom through the holes. there has got to be a easier way. Or was it not meant to be taken apart? should i have soaked and rinsed the air cleaner in diesel fuel to dissolve the sludge? Thanks.

I think the metal retainer is spot welded in. Someone here posted that you could change it with a paper element.

The way I clean them is this. I get a 5 gal bucket and fill it with gas and drip the air cleaner in it. Let it sit a few hours then work it up and down to agitate it and let it set again. Takes a good 24 hours or so but most of the time working it and letting it sit does the job

Here is how I do it. Drill out the spot welds and solder them back in after putting element back in. I clean the original elements. Couple of diet coke cans made a good core, you may have to wrap a few times to get to correct fit, want it nice and tight against edges both inner and outer edges.

About every year,I do what "Old" says farther down the posting here, but after soaking and blowing it out,I power wash thru the top and bottom and blow out again, and then let it air dry out in the sum for awhile.

Them things can get "grungy"!!!!!!

Well, here is the problem with power washing, steam cleaning and all the rest. If the air cleaner has plugged enough to cause channeling along the edges which they often do, there is no way you can get that crap out from the top end. Around these parts, corn silks and chaff are the worst to try to get out. Granted, silks won't damage engine if they get through but when it gets enough it restricts air flow. Dirt will gradually work it's way into the engine if you only loosen it up and don't get it out. I have spent a lot of time washing these old girls over the years and when it still weights a ton you just give up and take it apart.
