crank pully

Trying to remove the crank pully off the front of an A engine. cant find a set screw or anything. Is there something holding it or is it just froze on there. Heated it and tried hammering it and afraid i'll break it. Thanks for any help.

The pulley is a press fit, no set screw -- a lot of info in the archives. You need a 2 jaw puller with a bearing separator behind the pulley to keep from breaking it.

Do the research and do it right. They do break. Can be replaced though. As mentioned research the archives.

I made a puller for the one I removed from the A/B engines. I took 2 pieces of 1/2 inch plate and cut a U shape in them and then set it up to bolt them together and used a puller on that plate. If you look in the archives you should be able to find pictures of ones others have built to do such a job. Being cast they do/will brake pretty easy if you do it the wrong way also BTDT

You need one of these pullers they made for a Cub. You still need a split bearing separator.
The opening needs to be made wider to clear the hub on the damper on your tractor. You can use a bottle jack or a hydraulic ram. Hal

If you have the flathead screw in there you could try tapping on a screwdriver with a hammer as you turn it. An impact driver is an option too. I drove my pulley off with an air hammer.
I'm assuming you're taking it off to change the seal, it probably got cooked when you heated the pulley.

I have to admit I don"t know if there are threaded holes in the casting of an A, and maybe I was just lucky, but I was able to pull the pulley on my 240 (same block as a Super C) with a harmonic dampener puller. Of course an impact wrench and penetrating oil helped.

good that you got it. frustrating i know. my 39 had a set boltd. they were easy to find, but they did have both tight fit and set screws.

Whatever you do, do NOT hook on to the flanges of the pulley with a jaw puller. You will break the pulley.
