Hey guys i no this subject is beat to death i have a 1948 Farmall H just rebuilt water pump 2new seals 2 new bearings i got 2 pks of packing which i put in both packs shot a couple shots of grease in its been several days now i have a leak around packing nut i tightend nut a little at a time now its bottomed out can;t tightend any more Ive heard you guys talk about graphite string which i went and bought i no i have to take out packing nut out which i can do while still do while on tractor how many wraps should i wrap around shapt then after each wrap push it then wrap more never usd graphite string thanks for all the help.

i used three pieces of wrap on mine.i did not put it in as one continous piece. I made a plunger from a piece of plastic pipe and used that to push the packing in place

I have graphite in my Super H's water pump because I could not stop the drip with the IH packing. However the graphite leaked for a while also and then stopped. I imagine that the IH packing would have eventually stopped the leak. I would use either the graphite or a minimum of 3 IH packings and wait a while. You might try loctite on the nut as has been suggested on this forum. The nut tends to work loose.
