thinking about a 1066 or 1086

I have an 806 now and i was thinking about buying something bigger with a cab since im picking up some more acres. I like the 1066 but for about the same price i can get a newer 1086 with a better cab. I want something with heat, AC, radio, and good lights. A 1466 or 1486 would be fine too. I know the cabs for the 06/56 series werent very nice, otherwise i would just put a cab on the 806 and keep it. What do you guys think? Anyone got a tractor for sale? Im located in Northern IL.

You will enjoy more HP.If you want a nice, quiet cab,go with a **86.The '66 cab isn't much better than the '06/56 cabs.I woulde also advise against the big(obnoxious)"deluxe"(66series) cab.Hot inside and you cant see $h!+ from inside!Steve

I vaguely recall replying to someone about Hiniker and Y-A-R cabs and telling them you could cook dinner in one on a hot day without AC. Was that you?

As uncomfortable as our 1206 with the Hiniker cab and no AC can be on a hot day (and it hasn't killed me yet), our early 1086 doesn't have the most wonderful cab on it as far as I'm concerned, either. It's a vast improvement over earlier cabs, though, and most people do love these cabs.

On a 1086, the doors open backwards. If you drive through a mud puddle and get out, you're almost assured of getting some of it on you or your clothes unless you're a string bean. I'm 6 ft. tall. It's impossible for me to stretch out in this cab without scuffing up the windows with my shoes. Earlier 86's had straight shifter levers that make it hard to get in the left side. It's also hard to line up to an implement without a mirror or some help because you can't really see the end of the drawbar while seated. The seat beats the heck out of me while going down a rough road at a reasonable speed. Also, don't have someone opening/closing doors while someone's fueling up, as the dust from the air filter will end up in the fuel tank.

Pros: cab is relatively quiet, with or without a muffler, AC is nice, and air filtration is good. Large fuel tank is nice to keep you going most of a day. 1086's are good, solid, honest tractors.

I'd take a good honest 06-56 series tractor any day over a 66-86 series with the same HP. It's a matter of personal choice, though. I like those dry-sleeve engines. A later 5488 might tempt me away from the 06-56's.

Hey Ag,I too farm with 06/56 tractors.I used to have
a 66 tractor/deluxe cab.I sold it.but I'm getting to
a point in my life where I'm tired of dust/noise and
wanting a nice cab.Ihaven't spent enough time in an
'86/'88 cab to know.I've spent a fair amount of time
in a JD soundgard.nice!!But I just cant imagine
owning a green tractor!!LOL or buying to fuel to run
it.

i really dont have a problem with my 806. It is a really good tractor doesnt burn a drop of oil and runs like a dream. I would just like a cab with heat, AC isnt a big deal. I use if for spring and fall tillage and it gets a little chilly sometimes. I actually just finished plowing this morning. Plus i picked up some more acres and driving up and down the road would be alot nicer with a cab. Is it worth putting a cab on or not. It already has the steps and platform for a cab. How much of a pain is it to put a cab on? I really dont need more HP.

Delta: I like the quitness and the AC and the fact that the air filtration is much better in the -86 series cabs. I just can't seem to get comfortable in one. I must be the only one though. Everyone always speaks highly of these cabs.

Ih had what they called a diamond factory shaped cab they put on the 66 it was the cheaper one of the two_Other than the noise wasn't a bad cab better than the deluxe I thought.Had a 1086 for a while good air and heat and quiet, ride, visability, entrance, seat sucked.Do'nt shoot me bought a 4630 JD do I need to say more.I still have 8 red ones.

I have been going through the exact same thoughts. I elected to buy a cab for my 806D, I didn't think I could Justify another tractor at this time. I wound up with a solid IH Custom cab off a '66 series, I had to make some filler plates for the floor and need to make a new panel for around the fuel tank. My only complaint? I think I just put a loud cab on a notoriously loud tractor. I haven't yet put a foam kit in it, I'm waiting for the weather to get a little warmer for the adhesive. And I haven't really gotten to use it yet (No Snow), So I don't know for certian how well the heater will work. Visibility seems acceptable, though. If you'd like, I'll get some pictures around and post them sometime. I think it looks kinda cool on the tractor, myself. Although, I already know I'll miss the open station in the summer! Have a good one! -Andy

I think the 86 series cab is much more comfortable but I am not bothered by the door and left hand shift controls either. The Deere Sound Guard and the White 2-1XX series cabs are better and may make a long day more bearable on the body.

Regardless of what they say about Hiniker or Year-A-Round cabs, they are far and away better cabs than any pre-86 series IH cab. Definitely better visibility than an ice cream box, or a diamond, or even the factory 66 series cabs.

Really they're not that bad in the summer with the windows open and the fan running.

A lot of the problems with noise and dust infiltration are due to age. The interior has crumbled and the window/door seals are shot. You can throw some hushmat on the ceiling and inner fenders to knock down the noise a whole bunch.

Have a 1086 that was 2 yrs. old with 450 hrs. when we got it and now has about 9000 hrs. Been solid and dependable, has a few nitpicking age related issues I haven't got around to fixing but nothing big. Much nicer to run than a 66 with a cab of any kind. There is no amount of hushmat that will keep the hyd. and transmission noise out of a 66 with a cab since it isn't an isolated cab. The 1066 is a perfectly fine tractor but the 86 has the better cab. The 5088 is even better and nicer but more money. We have a couple JD Soundgard cab tractors(4440 and 4755) they had the best cab of the period until the Magnums came out, but then you are into bigger money yet.

Noise levels and visability make the 86 series more attractive and outweigh the shift and door issues. The price isnt much different as neither has the best resale.Probably one of the best buys for horsepower. The new tractors have really improved and are getting some people to switch from Green To Red.
