Tire and rim sizes for an M

Okay, I need a little help here. A couple of years ago I bought and old M. It needs tires badly. They do hold air for the most part but they are size 12.4x38 which is the same tire that our H has. I want to go to either 13.6x38 or 14.9x38 tires on this tractor. What size rims do I need? I'm not sure of the correct way to measure a rim. From outside lip to outside lip the current rims measure 40". Crossways is a little hard to measure with the tire on but it appears to be between 10" and 11". The rims are in pretty decent shape but I am not going to try to jam bigger tires on too small rims. I will sell the tires and rims to someone with an H or M that cannot afford new tires and rims.

The 12.4's would have been the stock tire size for the M. The 13.6's look good on them, use a 12" rim very hard to find used and around 300 or so each new. However the 10" or 11" rims you have will work with the 13.6's just will be alittle pinched. 14.9'S to me are to large for a working M i know others will have there thoughts as well.

Typically you want your rim 1" narrower than your tire (13.6 tire...12" rim). However you can go a couple inches either way and depending on what the tractor is used for, it wont make on bit of difference. Obviously a narrower rim will balloon out the tread and a wider rim will flatten it out... Measure rim width from the inside the bead seat to the inside of the other bead seat. No need to measure across the rim...they are 38" rims unless someone has change your rear hubs with some high crop ones.

13.6s or 14.9s both look good on an M. Some even run 15.5"s...

Yeah, I figured I could get by with the old rims, but I'm going to fix this one up nice. It is a 1939 serial #782 and all castings match. I know the rims will be pricey, but I figure I should be able to get $350 for the old rims and tires so that will help. Where would a person go to get new rims for 13.6x38 tires?

you might be able to 200-300 is generally the rough range that would be ok to good rims and poor rubber. miller tire is where i bought me a few years ago. Shipping is the killer...

Give Scott Puntam at A.P. Equipment a call @ 800-400-2143. He usually has very good prices on factory direct NEW unverferth rims shipped right to your door.

I was quoted (not from Scott) $280ea for 12x38 deep drop rims back in October...

If your old tires are shot, you are probably looking to get $75-100 a piece for your old rims IF they are in good shape.

the original tire for the 39 would have been 36" but rims are hard to find. Nice to see anther low serial number M I have #529

YES, the early Ms came on 36" rims, but a 38" will replace it.

My 1940 M has 13.6x38 tires on 11" wide rims. The tires fit and look very good. The tractor had 14.9 tires when I bought it, and those tires were on the same 11" rims.

My Hs all have 10" wide rims, with 12.4x38 tires.

I run 14.9x38s on my 12" rims (measuring inside to inside on the rims, where the tire beads set.)

I wouldnt run any bigger tire than that on a 12" rim.(12" came on supers)I also WOULD NOT put a 14.9 on any narrower rim tham a 12"

A 14.9x38 should be put on a 14 inch rim same as a 15.5. Yea i know they will fix on any38 inch rim BUT for the tire to work like it is suppose to it needs a wide rim. And i have split more rims then i are to think about and weld in a band to make them 14-16 inches wide.

here is a pic of it

I don't think IH put 12 inch rims on until the 300/350 with double bevel rims appeared.

You mean the rim can be 1 inch narrower than the tread width, not the cross section. 13.6 has a tread width of 12 inches, a 14.9 has a tread width of 13 inches. Thus you can put a 14.9 on a 12 inch rim. But 14.9's are taller and mess up the ground speeds. But if you compare 14.9's on both 12 and 13 inch rims, the tires fit noticeably better on the 13's. Similarly, I have an M with 13.6's on 11 inch rims and a 460 with 13.6's on 12 inch rims. The tires on the 460 fit much better.

You guys are makeing this way too complicated.Put 13.6x38 tires on those 38"rims and be done with it.It will look just Fine!!Steve

I have 16.9 x 38 on the S/MTA , sure makes for a good mudder and the road speed with the RPM's set at 1950 sure makes the breeze nice going down the road on a warm day.

You are welcome to measure mine if you like? I have been told by another member on here they did make a 12" drop rim for the Supers. I could be wrong.

Yea DeltaRed,
I have seen SEVERAL post on tire/rim size on here and it ALWAYS gets out of hand. LMAO!

We ALL know you can SQUEEZE a BIG @SS tire on a too small of a rim,but its not the best thing to be doing. What you are saying is correct,in my opinion. 13.6s on HIS size of rim is the MOST ideal situation.

Put a new spring in it and rebushed the holes where the spring rides . And mine has a M&W gov. on it . It now will exceed the max speed for a SMV sign.
