Look what the mailman tried to shove in my mailbox today! lol

I had been wanting it for some surplus rearend parts for quite a few months now.It had ALOT of parts on it I didnt need,so I left it to be "picked".Told my local salvage man I wanted it and to deliver it.(he is a good guy!)Left my phone number and waited.

Driving home I passed the yard and it was gone!!!! I said "oh well" but was dis appointed.

Got home and found it dropped off in my driveway! I havent even paid him yet! (DONT WORRY,paying him tommorow!!!)Good fellow

I wont be keeping all that is here,I just wanted to keep it from the "furnace" and to get what I needed off of it.I also wanted to get anything here to someone who might need it.(NOT trying to make a killing here!!!)Send any emails if you have to have something.

Status of machine: drained about 2 quarts of water out of the rear, rest was grease,NO metal parts!
Drained about 2 cups of water out of oil pan,(expected, exaust was broken, left un covered for a few months)Engine stuck, but I already knew it would be.

#2 and #3 cylinder had water(expected) #1 and #4 bone dry.Filled them with diesel. Blew water out of #2 and #3 and filled with methanol, will clean back out and install penetrating oil tomorrow.

Pulled water drain plug in block, green antifreeze came out, clean looking, dont know the strength.will drain it all out.

Block is newer 281 casting.Nothing looking busted externally.Shifter hits all gears, chassis rolls freely.(I know, doesnt mean much untill you get inside and look!;)

I know this is "long winded" but I am a kid(AT HEART") with a new toy!!!!

Well I know the engine is newer (281,didnt get the date off of it yet.)

What casting dates you looking for?

ummmm......mike......i think thats a fixer!!! i have a complete narrow front in the barn, may have a grille laying around, have extra starters and gennys....... btw... what kind of 72 chevy do you have? i have a 72 stingray.

Dear Mike, With respect, I will ask you to take a piece of 2X8 and your jack, lift the front and turn the Cinder block 90* so the holes go up and down not sideways.
When I was teaching HS in 1976, the principle of the school died under a Pontiac Catalina. when the blocks under the car failed with him under it.
It is just not the strong way. A chunk of Plywood under it, and a 2X on top is needed. Jim.

ABSOLUTELY JIM!

I am not working on it sitting like this!(did all of the work I said BEFORE this pic.)Just got it sitting last night to get it out of the way..Going to move it one more time.

I have dropped concrete blocks from waist level before and had them shatter!

I dont have a 72 Got a 74 camaro.

Here is a pic for you of the 68 Stingray Pro Mod I worked on also(Re painted yellow before Chicago race)

I am thinking the motor is only SLIGHTLY stuck.I am going to be VERY meticulous about getting it un stuck.

Glennster,I think it will cost more in parts (The parts I let get "picked" off.)to make it a complete tractor again?? I thought it was PRIME for an antique puller! I really just bought it for the spare internal stuff.

I do wanna get a carb and ignition for temporary to fire up the engine one time to acess engine.Would probably need complete rebuild to make it a good one?

It would take ANOTHER ,more complete,AFFORDABLE, salvage M (needs a 2 bolt starter)to get this thing running without breaking the bank! I have a complete lower bolster.About everyone is making Me "Pay what they weigh" at the bone yards. When metal prices are high,I can see why it is tempting to "torch" these up.

That is kinda strange.Around here,a decent,average running M averages about $1200.00 to $1500.00, but if you run it across the scrap mans scales,it will fetch you about 600.00 to 950.00 dollars(market is up and down) .OR if you part out a COMPLETE tractor for premium money on each part,you at least DOUBLE/TRIPPLE the original price you paid for a running tractor ????? With an M TA style grill ACTUALLY getting $400.00 + .It is no wonder guys are ripping them apart and selling the remains to the scrap yards. I know they all cant run. There has to be "donor" tractors to keep the "user" tractor running. Maybe its just the "circle of life"? :{

sweet rides mike!!!! here is a couple pics of one of my employees 82 cutlass. 1600 hp blown alcohol, 3500lb car, all metal. runs a 350 olds diesel block with batten heads. runs in the low 7 seconds at about 196 mph thru the traps.

I might give that a try.

I just put the methanol in it last night to get every ounce of water out of the cylinders before I make my next move.

How long should I soak it in Vinegar for????

Mike, congrats on your first "save"! The fever is taking hold and soon you'll have ten more just like it and your yard will look like mine!

Seriously, I agree that this one does not look too far gone to be put back into action. And you drained only 2 quarts of water out of the rear? Not bad!

Could be a real "sleeper" with a 281!

Around here too, stage 1 supers are in demand for the pulling crowd. I have a non running ex-distillate stage 1 that's in a "state of slumber" that several have tried to buy. (If I sell it there will be a hole in my collection)

That _is_ a good man to work with you on that and even deliver it!

Yea Centex, this is a PRIME puller candidate in my mind.

All the "stuff" you would remove to build a puller is GONE!!!!

The stuff that is left is SOLID.I will tell more about the engine in the future.
FYI,The D@MN hood was cut for the alternator, but just bent out of the way a little. I might get ambituos and weld ot back and grind it out.All the sheet metal that you see I wouldnt hesitate to use.Needs new lower grill !!!! looks like it was removed via a log chain and another tractor.lol

Yeah, I couldn't tell a lot from the right side view, but the remaining sheet metal didn't look too bent up. Looking closer at the right side photo is that the remainder of the grill flapping in the breeze? I'm surprised no one snagged the radiator. There's some bucks saved if you need a spare.

Looks like a straight gasoline model, any unusual suffix on the tag?

No strange stampings

It reads: SM L-5009xx

Looks to be LATER 52 gas model.

FYI,the radiator is a later IH replacement,It has a 2" hole only thru the first layer of core, but was repaired.I wouldnt be afraid to use it at all.

I see where this is going!!! LOL

Pro Mod Farmall ?????? AA/FC Farmall????

I am spread TOO thin right now, would never happen, but always wanted to hook onto a sled with an UNLIMITED tractor "NTPA style" and pull that whole d@mn thing PAST the 300 ft mark, thru the arena exit ALL THE WAY out to the parking lot !!!!! Just MY sick little dream ! You got my blood going now! L M A O!
