Pulling Stumps

I have been clearing about 3/4 of an acre to start a garden. It has been let go for 20 years. I have been pulling trees and stumps out with a Farmall 140 and an International 464 diesel. The 140 does great pulling "140 size" material from the fast hitch drawbar. However, the 464 doesn't do quite as well as I would like it to. It has plenty of power, but seems to lose traction quickly. My dad has always told me to pull from the front bumper on the 464 (and I understand this negates rollover dangers), but I think I would do better if I pulled stumps from the drawbar, as I believe it will add traction. By the way, when I pull in reverse, I always have a bush hog hooked up for weight, but it doesn't appear to help very much. Also, these stumps are mainly privets between 4 and 12 inches across at the base. Any advice will be appreciated!

Pulling from the front is a good safe way But you lose traction when backing the tractor.
To late now but had you cut the trees about 3' from the ground = you would have more leverage.
I have burned a lot of stumps by using an old tractor rim. Just add some fuel oil and wood to it abd let it burn. It's slow but works well.

dont forget your tires get alot beter traction in forward than reverse so pulling from draw bar is going to for sure give you much beter traction, your 464 being a utility platform should not lift front off the ground more than likely will loose traction before lifting

You will get better results pulling from the drawbar, after all that is what Farmall intended. Pulling from the drawbar transfers weight two ways: 1) Tractor weight is transferred by the lever arm resulting from the height of the drawbar above the tire contact patch. 2) Assuming the drawbar is higher than the attachment point of the chain on the stump - the angle of the chain has a downward component which loads the rear of the tractor. This is why hitch height is controlled and inspected on pulling tractors.

Just be careful, keep ready on the clutch and you should be safe. Years ago the farmers in this area used to hitch the chain higher than the normal drawbar position - this practice can get you in trouble.

464 is a light little frameless utility tractor. That's your biggest challenge to traction.

The 140 pound-for-pound has the best traction of any Farmall out there.

If you hook to the drawbar you'll get better traction and you'll be reasonably safe as long as you don't jerk the chain.
