corn head grease question

What keeps the lube from leaking out past the steering worm shaft out the radiator side of the bolster? My tractor has no seal there and the hole looks low enough in the cavity that lube would leak past that shaft.

Thanks,
Dan

There are two oil seals in the housing. You have to remove all the shafts. Then there is one pulled into that shaft area, that you pull in from the back. There is one in the bottom of the housing, pulled vertically up from below. Not too difficult to do, just awquard, but you either have to borrow the old IH seal-puller from the oldest guy at your Case-IH dealer, or have to rig up a puller of your own. I built one of all-thread, some sockets of various sizes, duct tape, wood shims, and i don't know what all. But the seals pull right up into place. I've heard that some guys install three; one they crush, the second they bend, and third times charm.

Yes,backing up what George said.

Should be a seal right where the worm gear shaft comes out of the gearbox. ANd they CAN be a handful to install!! My first attempt knocked the seal's tension spring out of it !!! lol

Dan, the seal part number from the Case IH web site changes to a National Seals # 470120 or 471224. The OD & ID is the same for both of those, the thickness being the difference. 470120 is 0.39" thick and 471224 is 0.25". These seals shouldn't be too hard to find. Hope that helps.
