Brake replacement

I am getting ready to pull the right drive on my 1953 Super A to replace brake band and drum. The rod is just Floating and the brake on that side does nothing except make a bad sound when applied. I have several manuals and it looks strait forward enough. I was just wondering if anyone had any pictures they could post of this operation? If not I will take some when I start to share.

I need to replace the linings on my SA as well. I have been putting it off as it looks like a very difficult job. I would really appreciate it if you take a bunch of pictures as you progress through the repair. They may help me get up enough nerve to do the same thing.

It looks like I will be doing this mid to late April.SA has the snow plow on it right now and since I do not know how long the job will take I do not want to have it in pieces if when it snows.Weather in Upstate NY along the Canadian Border is kinda unpredictable.I will take and post pictures once it is done.

Gentlemen, the job is not that difficult if you have a couple of things. I replaced the rear seals and brakes on my final drives on my 1944 A 2 years ago. Same exact setup.

first, I built cribbing under the rear of the tractor so that the rear wheels were both 2" off the floor. I did this under my overhead beam trolley system in the garage, with the overhead beam directly over and parallel to the axles.

I then used the trolley and a 5/16" chain bolted to the final drives where the draw bar bolts on. remove the bolts holding the final drive on the axle housing. used the trolly to "roll" the whole final drive, wheel and all, away from the axle housings. replaced seals and brakes while the whole final drive was hanging on the trolley. When ready rolled then back and re-installed.

was able to complete as a 1 man job, and very little risk of injury or accident. I am sure a cherry picker shop crane would work in place of a trolley system. If you have the right equipment, it is not a big job at all. did both sides on a Saturday in about 6 hours total.....that included 1 coffee break before noon, and 1 beer break around 2!

Where are you located? I am a Buffalo native and attended Clarkson. Am now living in central Texas and one thing is for sure...I don"t miss the northern weather.

Doug I am in Plattsburgh. Not much snow this year. Not much cold either.I have a fairly well equipped shop to work in.The process looks pretty straight forward.I plan on doing seals and all while i am in there.I just picked this SA up about 5 months ago.It spent the first part of its life as a lawn mower for Saratoga County.1 coat orange paint. Then it went to a smaller highway department.1 coat yellow paint. Then at a horse farm just out side of Saratoga. 1 coat red paint. I have to do some work on it.The brakes are the biggest job left to do.I will post pictures when I am through. There are 2 projects ahead of it.I need to complete them first.

OK winters is just about over.I guess I better get the brake job started.
