M oil pick-up

Drained the oil on a non-running M and noticed the pick-up was touching the bottom of the pan. Went ahead and pulled the pan to clean the gunk out. The pick-up moved up and down easily with the tube on the pump body. Is it supposed to float with the oil level or be stationary? Seems like it could loose some suction unless it is secure in the pump body??
Also, is there any tweaking (part replacement, etc) that should be done to the pump since it is available? Thanks, JD

all is well.thats the way they work. the pumps usually dont give much trouble. you could probably clean out the relief valve in the body since it may be sticky too, but should be allright. you can check the oil pressure once its running should be 38-46 lbs.

Depends on your oil pressure, mine gets too low when the engine gets warmed up. On Rustyfarmall's suggestion, last night I took the bottom cover off the oil pump, the surface is worn from contact with the gears. I plan on taking the cover to the machine shop today to have it ground or milled flat again. That seems to be the least expensive oil pump work I can have done, I have priced out replacement parts from the local Case-IH dealer, gets expensive quick!

Gear and shaft $360
The idler gear below that with 12 teeth, $104
Oil regulating valve $39
Spring below the valve - $12
Gasket below the cover $5
Pickup screen with nozzle into the cover $42
Oil pan gasket $14

QUESTION; I put Mobil 1 Grease in around pump gears as Jan. has said in past , but wonder if small plug 3 or 4 in. up on pump could be removed and filled width oil to help oil pick up when first started? Buck

Unlike some engines, even if you put that pump in dry, if you filled the engine with the correct amount of oil the pump would be full of oil before you started the engine. The pump is located well below the upper level of the oil.
