magnato or coil converstion

Last week I got my first tractor since I was a kid working with my grandpa. Its a 41 Farmall H, it ran when I got it but you had to pull it at a pretty good pace in order to get it to run.

First off the carb was leaking, two of the plug wires looked like they were from 1941 and the 12 volt conversion was wired ALL wrong (they had no clue what they were doing).

I rebuilt the carb with a complete rebuild kit, I rewired the altinator the lights and switch system. Got new plugs and plug wires cap rotor and condencer. I have not put the cap rotor on yet due to them not showing up yet.

My question... IS the magneato bad due to haveing to pull it so fast to get it started? I do not want to have to tear it apart again. I can go to a coil system but I really want it to be as original as possable.

any help would be great.
thanks

impusle coupling could be stuck on the mag, you should be able to hear a good 'click' when turning over by hand. I would also though in a set of points and condensor while in there, cheap parts and can make or break it.

You can tell if the rotor is timed correct if you will make a mark on the body where the towers are that the sparkplug wires go. Then remove the cap and turn the engine over then check if the rotor stops at the mark before it snaps. The gears turning the rotor can be timed so the rotor will line up with the tower when it snaps. Sounds like that is the problem as it will make them hard to start with the starter but pulling will make it run.

I forgot, I did get points and put them in. Im waiting for the condencer they were supposed to be here yesterday but didnt show up. I get a good click and everything looks good. I will make sure that the rotor is lined up with the towers when I put it back together.

I still need to know about the mag. I always thought if they go out they are done no in between it works or it doesent.

Thanks

Ill bet if you do a complete overhaul everthing will be ok,I wouldnt trade a mag,for a distrubitor, and the money you spend on a 12 v conversion you can put it back together right.A H will start and turn over good with 6 volts.Be proud of this peice of history and try not to re-enginerr it,IH did a good job to start with. The letter series tractors was probally the best tractors ever made in their time

Thanks Jimmy,

the 12 volt system was on it when I got it. I had to fix the wireing. I really wish it was original but ya get other people's screw ups when you buy something like this. I do plan on restoring it next winter, My daughter and I are going to spend lots of father daughter time for Haley's H. LOL ... For now I need it this summer for hauling wood out of the woods for heating so Im going to leave it like it is.

I am pretty proud of this tractor. Like I said its my first since I was a kid (35 years ago) it reminded me of my grandpa and all the times we had farming. After I get this one done Im going to look for a super M for my son.I will post pictures and logs of what it looks like.

thanks Jimmy

well I just found a web site that showed how to test a mag...

as for "recharging" the mag..

I think it would be easyer to buy a new one but thanks anyhow. LOL

Thanks for everyones comments

You need to make sure your impulse coupling is snapping when making a start. I would also pull a plug wire while the engine is running and see what the spark looks like. If it's a weak yellow your coil may be getting weak in your mag.

Shawn,I definitly reccomend a SM!I've owned mine for 30 years!Got newer and bigger,bit I still use(and LIKE!) my "Super"!(you can see pics of him at "M vs 450" below)Steve

The rotor magnet in those H4 mags is made of a material that doesn't lose it's strength. I still recharge them when I have them apart. The old horseshoe magnets on the F4 mag got weak sooner.

Check the valve clearances. My H was starting like that (literally 1/4 mile tow!) and I found out about the valves. They were way off. After setting them, it starts on the first or second revolution.
