Pulling tractor

ok so just for fun I am thinking about starting to build a pulling tractor. I have three different tractors that I could use a Farmall Super C or a C demonstrator or a John Deere slant dash A. All the tractors run good and the JD A has new rubber. I do not know much of anything about puling tractors. I want to do well with this if I do it and we all know how costly this hobby can be. So with that in mind what way do you all think would be a fun build?

The Super C can have about 134 cu in without boring, the 1950 C 123 cu in. Comparing a JD A to a C is like an apple to an orange. Pick what you like.

I don't know your pulling rules, the SC will be heavier if it has a fast hitch--it can be removed. Otherwise I know of no other weight differences more than a pound or two.

If I were to use the JD A would I need a special clutch? and would it be fine to just shave the head0.001 off. with a budget in mind what would be a cheek list of things to do to it? thanks

With a budget you run what your brung. He said a tenth (.100) not a thousandth (.001) off the head. On a Farmall head .001 wouldn't even clean it up (not sure about a JD head) An A will make plenty of power to pull in an honest stock class. I know TIMING IS IMPORTANT when it comes to pulling Farmalls and I can't imagine a JD is any different. I think a good start would be networking with JD people. You also need to GET A COPY OF THE RULES for the club you will be pulling with. There is no sense doing something that will get you kicked out or put into a higher class. Also, ditch those brand new tires. Take the tires off the C/SC if they are half worn Firestone Field & Roads and run those or a similar lug pattern.

* If a slant dash is super valuable I would not modify it too much for pulling. I think that just puts it into an age catagory, but JDs are not my specialty.

Power for pound the Super C will have the cheapest power. The slant dash A's are geared high and often run out of power stock in the 4500lb class. A Super C will be good power wise in a 3000lb class stock, with the overbore you will be set for 3500lb even 4000lb class in some pits. A good 30ish hp Super C would cost you around 300 for a piston and sleeve set, 75 to get the head decked some other minor tweaking 50/75 so for about 400ish you have a decent starter puller. The A would be considerbly more have to bore out or find power block more head work etc, really the trans holds that one back.

Hit the C and the JDA over the hood with a mallet, you know put them to sleep and concentrate on the SC. You can pour a ton of money into the A and it will never do much. The C is just too small on power.

I would like to say thanks you have all given me a lot to think about. I am going with a red tractor for this build because "IT IS RED" and I have 4 of them. Now I just need to find the right mix of pistons sleeves and maybe a camshaft? To point me in the right direction. thanks

AND A COPY OF THE RULES!!!

You'll be miles ahead and still have plenty of money in your pocket going with one of the C's. Poppers just cost way to much to make pull against any real serious competitors. My wife pulls a B Popper and there is more $$$ in the block on that thing than I put into building my entire Farmall H! With the little C's, find you a C-153 combine engine and go from there, H power in a C package!
