The tires on my tractors ( all Firestones }develope what I would describe as a shinny glaze while sitting in my garages. Its fairly hard to remove. Does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this and if there is a way to prevent it? Thanks

It would help to know a little more about this "shiny glaze." Shiny how? Is it sticky? What removes it?

Most people spend hours trying to achieve a shiny glaze on their tires. You want to remove it?

Its hard to describe but its not attractive and not at all uniform. If you rub very hard it comes off with automotive tire cleaning solutions. A little gasoline will also remove it.

Could it have anything to do with flourescent lighting. It seems like it is worse the closer you get to the lighting. For instance the top of the tires on my SMTA are real bad but the ones on my Cubs not so much. Just athought.

They have been cleaned with automotive tire cleaning products. Could this be the cause? If so any idea on how to clean them so it won't happen again?

Now that I think about it the appearence is like gasoline on top of water if you can imagine that. Sorry I'm finding it hard to describe.

Probably, try scrubbing them with soap and water and stop using tire products. I have "new" tires on 4 restored tractors that I have never touched, two as old as 10 years. They are always inside and look good as new. Tire products, particularly on a tractor, look artificial to me. Put your effort on the sheet metal.

You may be creating your own problem by using "automotive products" and GASOLINE to clean your tires. The more you clean the worse the "glaze" will get.

Gasoline and oil are really bad news on rubber.

UV damage causes the tire to look dry and chalky. Really have no idea what would cause a "oil slick on water" type of glaze on a tire.

Can you post a picture?

"automotive tire cleaning products"

That's your problem. If you feel the need to clean them use soap and water with a scrub brush. Products like Amour All are horrible on finishes. Most anything that leaves a finish "shiny" is causing damage.
