Farmall 450 Gas Tachometer adjustment

Hello,
I just got my new Tach plastic gear and a new cable. I have the old style tach gear housing, with the notches for the screws. I was hoping some one could explain how to adjust it correctly.

I did notice that the actual housing is off center, and I am assuming that this is because when you rotate the housing the new plastic gear inside actually moves a little up or down from the distributor gear.

I just turned the housing until I had "finger tight" pressure and then backed it off until the notches would let me put in the screws.

Is that the correct procedure?? Or did I do it all wrong.

Thanks
Tony

Tony you say you have old style houseing and new style gear. I put a new gear and cable in mine this spring and had to buy a new style housing to get it to work. The new gear is held in with a different style clip and shaft on new gear is larger than hole in old housing. I went through Bates and they got me the correct housing.

Yea, I actually filed down the shaft with emery cloth until I matched the old plastic shaft diameters. I did this because I could not get a new housing from any Case dealership. And I have heard that other people have done the same thing with the newer steel shafts.

I had to buy a new housing because the shaft on new gear had a groove for a keeper. The old housing did not have a place in it to slip a keeper on shaft of new gear. I think the new housing cost me around $50.00 but it was matched to the new gear.
