I figured it out! turns out the ammeter was switched out and + & - are actualy bat & alt and are reversed from diagram in the book. It wasn't untill removed the gauge and got a good look at the back to find this out. I guess all ameters are not created equal.figured it would be something stuppid

Nothing wrong with the Ammeter they just read which way the current is flowing and if the terminals are wired backward it will read backward. They either read or they dont. Use a volt meter and that will tell you which the positive lead is.
