I replaced the R/1 shift fork that was broken in 3 pieces. Found all the pieces right on top so don't think anything went through the gears. Drained all the oil and it was nice and clean, no metal of any kind. While changing the fork noticed that the 3/8" ball(s) that fit in the shift rod (not sure what they are really called. was missing. Checked the 2/3 fork rod and it was gone also. Replaced both. Put the thing back together and took it for a spin. R/1 work great. 2nd was no problem. It goes into 3rd just find but won't stay in 3rd once the clutch is released. Shifter doesn't move it stays as if in third. Ran out of time today. Will pull the shifter off again and take a look. What is my problem?
 
Could the fork be on backwards? Other than that looking at the third gear when it is in the opsition it would be for operating in that gear might give you an idea. I wold put it in 3rd then lift the top to look at the circumstances. Jim
 
Does the lever throw as far into third as it does the other 3 gears? If not, the lost 2-3 detent ball may be lost into the space of the transmission housing where the shift rail slides forward. If so, the rail can't slide completely into third gear.
 
I'm going to pull the shifter this morning. After thinking about it I may have broken the shift fork for 2/3. What I didn't mention in my first post was that I also replaced the shift knob. I boiled it first to get it hot since the fit is soooo tight. Then pushed it on with a bunch of force. I just might have damaged the shift fork doing it. We shall see. One step forward and about 3 back...
 
Well it's fixed! No broken shift fork. Jim had it exactly right. The "lost" detent ball was indeed inside the shift rail space. In fact so was the one on the other rail. Must be a little more room on that one as it shifted properly over there. So if anyone needs some 3/8 ball I've got a box of 45. You guys are scary on what you know. Thanks a bunch.
