cub charging to -

I just got the gen. and v.reg. redone for my cub and it charges backwards .ALL wires are correct but the amp meter operates the opposite way it should. I do have it on + ground even reversed the wires and no luck???

You can double check the polaritiy with everything hooked up. It just takes a second to do.
For some reason did you reverse the wires on the ammeter by mistake.

I have another reg comming in a couple days cause this one gharges a bit much. I did try to polarize again, same results. I did notice fuse block is missing. Thanks

If you feel everything is hooked up right and you repolarized the generator and the ammeter wires have not been reversed and is still reading backwards and the battery is charging ok,you got me swinging by a barn door.
Sorry.
I guess when you or somebody else get's this figured out we'll both learn something.

polarize again without engine running sometimes you do need to polarize more than once. Then using analog meter you can read the voltage and polarity all over the system with engine running. Measure at the batt terminal then at the A terminal then at the ammeter that way you will know its charging correct.

Okay: You may have the battery installed wrong,,,,the genny got polarized opposite from how your tractor is configured,,,,,,,,the ammeter may be wired backwards........

1) If a shop just rebuilt it THERES A CHANCE THE GENNY MAY BE POLARIZED AT NEGATIVE GROUND AND NOW YOU MAY BE RUNNING IT AT POS GROUND!!!!!!!!!!

2) HOW IS THE BATTERY CONNECTED NOW??? Pos or Neg grounded?????????????

3) FIRST get the battery connected as you want it, original 6 volt was Pos ground and if its all original the ammeter for 6 volt WILL BE WIRED FOR A POSITIVE GROUND ARRANGEMENT and it will register bass ackwards if youre now at Neg ground!!!

4) I cant tell from sitting here if your ammeter leads got swapped at some time accidentally or if youre now at Pos or Neg ground HOWEVER I CAN TELL YOU THIS:

a) If all is working correct??? but its ONLY the ammeter that isnt registering properly YOU CAN SIMPLY REVERSE AMMETER LEADS

b) If the ammeter is wired correct to match your polarity if you turn on lights or ignition when shes not running THE AMMETER SHOULD SWING TO - DISCHARGE (if not sawp its leads)

5) CAUTION if the genny is polarized opposite polarity from your battery YOU CAN DAMAGE THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR

THAT ALL BEING SAID HERES WHAT ID DO IF IT WERE ORIGINALLY POSITIVE GROUNDED

1) FIRST install battery at Pos ground
2) POLARIZE the genny
3) Test the ammeter to see if its wired to
match your polarity (see above)
4) Start her up and see if its charging and if
the ammeter works correct

Got it????????????

Do you want it to be as it was from the factory?
we need to know if it is distributor or mag,
6volt or 12.
If you want it to be stock configuration it needs to be positive ground. Make sure the battery is connected so the positive post is connected to the chassis of the tractor, and the negative post is hooked to the starter switch.
If you want it to be negative ground, put negative bat post to ground. Next (before anything else including starting it) jump between the Bat terminal on the VR to the Arm/Gen terminal for one second. This polarizes the gen. It will spark.
Now start it and run it to 1/2 throttle or more.
If the amp gauge moves right, all may be well.
If it moves left, do the following:
With the engine off, turn on the lights. If the amp meter moves to the right, carefully mark then remove the wires from it and put them on the opposite posts. now start it and see if it moves right at 1/2 throttle. If so check the charge rate. If the battery is charged the voltage should be 7 to 7.2 volts. If it needs some charging it could be closer to 6.6 to 7 volts, but that is OK.
All of the above depends on the wiring being correct for the Cub with generator. Jim

If it is charging the battery, I would just swap the wires on the ammeter and quit worrying about it.

Has the battery ever been totally dead? Maybe it is charged backwards. Put a voltmeter on it & make sure it has + in the big post & - in the small post.
