Starting problem

Super H not wanting to start unless you turn the starter loose and then it will fire.
Runs good, pulls good but starting to be difficult to start.

Pretty simple fix. Replace the battery cables with 00gauge welding cable with soldered on ends. The use of automotive #4 cable is not going to pass enough current to fire the ignition and crank it. if (and only if those cables are serious and connections great, should you look at the starter. This assumes the battery is fully charged and will put out 5.5 volts (measured across the battery terminals when someone is cranking it over)
If cables are good and voltage is less the battery may be getting weak.
Starter motors do get worn bushings and drag the armature on the frame. Or shorted internally and get weak. If the above does not fix it go back several pages to find my description of rebuilding a starter, or have it done. Jim

if I read you correctly, while cranking it won't fire but as soon as you release the starter it does?

if that is correct.. then I will asusme you are battery ignition, and you are getting low power to the coil and points..

when that huge starter load eases up, she is still spinning and thus fires.

check battery to make sure it is good.. make sure cables and ends are good and correct size. clean all grounds and terminal ends.

check all connections at ignition switch and coil / any resistors / at the dizzy.

once all cleaned up.. re check.

if starter drags it will eat power.. IE.. may need bushings.

if that is not it, try jumping out ignition switch.. might be bad contacts.

also may try swapping in a known good coil if you are usig an older one. older non oil potted coils don't last like the new ones do many times...

( ps.. i bet a donor battery hooked tot he coil / ground, makes her fire right over when you hit the start button? )

Tractor has 00 cables but I will check all the connections and battery 6 volt batteries don't seem to last over a year anymore

I will go with a weak battery and the starting when you let up on the starter. I learned that with my SM. I wouldnt even have to use the choke
when starting. Just use it to keep it running untill it warmed up some.

Better check ring gear and Bendix on your starter get the starter refreshed new bearing and bushing maybe a new Bendix your batterys will last longer than a year is your charging system working correct overcharging will burn a batt easy. How many amps does the meter say when charging only needs a few amps. Those systems are just fine if things are in shape. You wouldnt drive a 70yr old car around if it wasnt in shape and the tractor deserves the same care.

Found the distributor cap not seated properly and it had gotten grime on the inside. Cleaned everything up and starts like it should. Thanks for all the help.
