My friend just bought an older "A" model. Little tractor runs real good. Seems like the gears are all super fast. Can't even keep up walking with it in first gear and on idle. Perhaps gears were changed by someone using it for a "pull" tractor? The other question: there is no way to turn off the engine. No switch anywhere. What did the original tractor have for a kill switch?
 
First it sounds like the throttle is stuck open or the carb idle screw in too far. Engine should idle nice and slow. As for the switch, on the side of the mag there is a single screw with some plastic (micarda) around it. Ground this screw to frame and it will stop. Good luck.

Unless the tractor is old enough to have the cable actuated magneto ground.
 
The first Farmall A tractors had a tab on the side of the magneto that you pushed in to ground the magneto. You had to stand alongside the front of the tractor to do this. (very like a lot of the small rotary hoes etc. where you pressed a tab down on the spark plug to stop them (hoping you pressed the tab not the plug)).
This was then replaced with a Bowden cable operated tab (worked the same way except it could be done from the seat).
The final version was the electrical grounding cable from the magneto switch as fitted to the larger tractors.
 
Thanks to everyone for their response. I think this tractor was built in 1940. I now know where & what to look for to stop the engine. As to the speed of the tractor. No, the carb is not stuck as the engine runs real good. I can't keep up with it by walking when it is in 3rd gear and the engine is at idle. Id there some place to find out what the MPH speed is for each of the gears, with engine at either idle or full rpm?
