just finished watching american restoration on history and he give a bid of $2600-$2800 on a 856 pedal tractor? I noticed the tires were backwards also, guess I'm in the wrong business farming here in wisconsin.

I got my pedal tractor new in the 80s. It had backward tires as long as I can remember and my grandparents had a large photo of me driving it. It may have been the way they all were assembled.

Most dealers had to assemble them after they came in. Chances were they were just put on wrong and no one took the time to change them

There is a friend of mine that lives about 5 miles down the road that paid $1200 for a what to me and most "reasonable" men would have been considered a pile of rust. BUT, when he called a place in California to order wheels for it, the guy on the phone offered him $6000 for it, site unseen! He did not take the offer. He also gave my daughter a JD 730 pedal tractor that is worth about $1500-$2000 as a gift when he decided to cut down on his collection size! As you said, we are ALL in the wrong business!

It was about 73 or so when my brother got a 656 pedal tractor(I got a pedal fire engine), along with a matching two-wheeled wagon that hooked on behind it(tractor tires were on correctly).

Mid to late 80"s, a guy who delivered feed saw it and asked dad if he could have it for his kids, and dad said go ahead and take it...grrrr! Was upset with dad for giving it away then and even more so now!

Seriously? I bought an original 856 pedal tractor in pretty nice shape for $200 for my dad abut 7 years ago.

The rear axle has a round hole on one side and an oblong hole on the other for the drive wheel. They either got the axle in wrong or the tires were mounted backwards on the rims. That show is kind of interesting, but at the same time leaves a lot to be desired.

To be fair, that wasn't an offer for the tractor, that's what it cost to restore it.

That being said....That's a lot of dough to restore a little old pedal tractor!

I know it was a sentimental thing but you can get new ones for a few hundred. I've got a green one (I know, I know) up in my fathers garage I had as a kid. Pretty good shape, ready to go when my son & daughter get big enough.

If it cost more than $1000, including man-hours, to do a premo restore on that toy, I'd eat my hat.

The price was either for the show's benefit, or the customer got taken for a ride.
