1086 Engine Labors When Steering

I just replaced a hand pump on the 1086 with a reman. The old hand pump leaked internally and caused the steering to drift. With the new pump, I now noticed when sitting still and you turn the wheel to the left the engine slightly labors until you turn the wheel back to the right. Is something else wrong that could have taken out the old hand pump?

Thanks

If turning the wheel slightly stops the laboring, the problem is in the hand pump. With engine shut off, you should be able to feel the free movement in the hand pump nice and free and equal in both directions and it should return to center when you let go of it. That free movement is the torsion bar windup moving the internal spool. Different hand pumps have different torsion bars with lighter ones making for easier steering but they also could make it more difficult for the valve to return to neutral with the less tension from torsion bar.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check it out with the engine off. I did notice that the new hand pump seems to steer a little stiffer than the old one. Would it be possible to switch torsion bars from the old pump to the new? Or maybe I would be better off returning the new one for a different one.

Thanks again

I think you would be better off returning the hand pump for a different one. As Pete has posted the problem is in the hand pump and if you take it apart you will have problems if you try to return it.
