Farmall 300/350 Help

Neighbor has old Farmall tractor that is either a 300 or 350. I am thinking of buying it but wanted to know which it is. He is a scrap man and just got it. On the serial # plate all I can read is 554. Looking on tractor data this serial # could be for a '54 300 or a '56 350. The grill is white like a 350 but the one hood side it does have has no white. I know many 300s were painted like the 350s. Has no battery and it was almost dark when I looked at it this evening so not sure if it is 12V or 6V. Of course that could have been changed also. How else can I figure out which it is? He says it runs good and drives. It is worth $500? Tires are not so good but hold air. Has fast hitch with 3pt arms and drawbar.

I would say it is worth it in a heartbeat. You would have $2000 worth of parts, probably, if you decided to part it out. If it runs well enough and is worth repairing it would be a great deal for that too. Actually just the fast hitch you described is worth a good part of the price if it is not broken up. I would pay $500 for that tractor even with flat tires and a stuck engine. I don't know how to tell if it is a 300 or 350, but either one is pretty collectable or useful, depending what you want to do with it.

If the fast hitch one large hydraulic cylinder on the rear and a smaller one on the right side it is a 300, this would make it late 54 thru mid 1955.
Later 300's and all 350's had the newer style fast hitch with traction control with just one large cylinder on the rear, and a large handle left of the driver's seat.
Look on the rh side of the engine block towards the rear, it will have a large raised (stamp) C169 is a 300, C175 is a 350.

Thanks for the replys. rhtx 55, I believe it had only one cyl on the fast hitch and I think I remember the handle you talked about. The 300 or 350 emblem is gone off the hood. I really don't need the tractor as I have three now but kinda been looking for another project so I am going back tomorrow before it gets dark and take another look. Probably take the cash with me.

If the serial number is 554 and its a 300 the date code on several of the major castings will end with the letter Z. If several end with the letter B its a 350.

Thanks for the information. Really don't matter but if I buy it and it does run okay, I will fix it up and paint it. I just like things to be as they should and wold paint it the way it should be for the model it is and find the 350 or 300 for the hood. I would have to find one hood side and that could be a problem. I was also wondering if the 350s had the center in the steering wheel, but looked at a steering wheel for it on this site and both kinds were listed for a 350. I think this one does not have the large center. I may take a battery and some gas with me when I go back. He said it would run, or he was told it would...we'll see.

The 350's had the large steering wheel center. My 300 just has the castle nut in the center.
I would buy it personally, "good" 300's & 350's are getting hard to find, especially with a fast hitch.
Good luck, I hope it is in workable condition for you.

The hood isn't that hard to find - parts places have them and they always seem to show up on EBay. The emblems are also available on E-Bay - both reproduction and used originals.

I've always liked the 300/350 (we had a 300 growing up and I have a 350 I bought in 1998). They are much handier to use than an H (live PTO, live multiple port hydraulics, fast hitch) will being just as fuel efficent. Other than the TAs they seem to have stood up very well to the rigors of time and use. Mine has the original TA (according to the last owner).

It looked rougher than a cob (tires and paint were horribly weathered from decades of sitting outside) when I bought it but the sheet metal was good and the hours were fairly low. After draining the transmission (had over 5 gallon of water and was at least 3 gallon overfull) and doing 20 years of maintence in a week it has soldiered on very well for the last 14 years.

NONE of the 300's had a white grille or hood from the factory.

Dealers would repaint tractors brought in for major overhauls as part of the service package. It was pretty common for 300s and 400s to come home from the dealer with a white grille during 350/450 production years.

Are you sure it's not a 330?? They had a white grill and about the same size as a 300/350. It would be a 1957-58 if it's a 330. For some reason, all 330's I've ever seen in the wild are missing the numbers, usually, the paint is faded though. Grab it for what he's asking!!! Part it out if you have to.

Let us know what you do.....

It is a row crop with narrow front. Haven't had time to get back over and look at it again but it is not going anywhere. Hope to this evening and get the engine size and casting codes so I can see which it is. I'll let ya'll know if I buy it as I am sure I will have more questions. Dad and uncle bought a new 400 back in the day and had M and H but been 40 years since I was around them.

Just went back and looked at the tractor again today. It is a 350 from what I see. It has the large center in the steering wheel and the quick hitch as described for the 350. On the right side of the engine it it says C175. The 175 is stamped and you can tell something else was ground off. Is this a reman engine? Problem is that I pulled it in 1st gear and it did not want to come out. Of couse the tractor was not running but seemed like something hung up when I did it. Don't know when it last run but also looks overfull of oil and appears to be water. Not locked up as I could get the engine to turn with the fan by hand. I don't know at this point if I buy ot not. Wanted something to fix up and not a parts tractor.

I hope you decide to buy it, they make a fine looking tractor when finished, with the engine "stamped" that way I would say it is not original.
The 350 should have a raised casting of C175. I'm in Texas if you decide you don't want it, I would be interested.
I hope you decide to get it to fix up, it's a lot of work, more time consuming to rebuild all the hydraulics, you never seen so many orings & seals in your life, fixing the T/a isn't cheap but parts have come way down from a few years ago, and we all know how much tires have went up, parts are still available, not as proficient as the H's & M's, but I see quite a few parts advertised now more than before.

Here's my 55 300 taken in 2002
