I'm looking at adding hydraulics to a Farmall H so I can put a loader/snowplow on it. Assuming the belly pump is non-functional, what would be the best way to add hydraulics? It looks like PTO pumps are sort of pricey-- Is it difficult to put a belt-driven pump on? I'm looking to do it fairly cheaply-- something that would lift a snowplow and a smallish manure bucket.

I have my H running a loader with a snow plow off the belly pump. The pumps are pretty tough, are you sure that it isn't working? They are pretty easy to find to buy, I have one here but shipping is likely to be expensive to wherever you are. I have also wondered about running a belt driven pump, but I think the belly pump is the easiest system in some ways.

I am with Zachary on this one.

The belly pump would be the easiest. This would be my FIRST choice!!! I would FIRST acess why is wasnt functional. There are MANY replacements out there for it,if needed??? The belly pump would be SO handy for other things,as well!!!!

My personal SECOND option would be to run it off the front of the crankshaft. This can be done with an in expensive belt driven pump.

Get that belly pump working !!! ;)

Fix the belly pump.

As you said, PTO pumps are expensive. Distributor-drive (aka live) pumps make PTO pumps look cheap.

There's a reason hydraulic pumps larger than automotove power steering pumps are gear driven. Making volume and pressure requires a lot of horsepower, and it's tough to transmit that power through a belt without slippage.
