What should I expect from my A

I have a '47 farmall A that I put a c123 in. The engine came from a F240. Should I expect the same amount of horsepower or would a differant gear ratio in a 240 play a part? The reason I ask is because I was wondering if I could pull a 2 bottom little genius plow. I assume that the 240 was enough to pull a 2 bottom. Thanks in advance.

As per the NEB test the A has around 18HP and the 240 around 31 HP so if the rear end and transmission hold up on theory your A would now have around 31HP if you kept it as it was as in gov. carb etc.

You have almost doubled your horsepower, so you have to be careful with the rest of the drive line. Plow questions always depend on soil condition and what you really want to accomplish, 80 acres or 80 foot garden? The A is a light tractor for much "heavy" field work hence Culti-Vision. Small tires, light tractor: yes you could pull a 2 bottom little genius but not sure you will be happy with the results.

the other thing that comes into play is: 12, 14, or 16 inch bottoms. With the A, traction will begin to factor in as well. It may have enough umph to pull it, but it may not have enough a$$..........

My 140 pulls a 2-14 fast hitch plow. I have no idea whatsoever why the 240 is rated at 31 horsepower when the 140 (which has the 123 also) has 21 drawbar horsepower, or 24 belt horsepower. Personally, I do not think you will like the results of a little genius plow behind your A, but I could also be very wrong.

You might have the horse power but do you have the weight? If you do not have enough weight on your tractor you will not be able to pull your plow.

It should have quite a bit more power at the same RPMs because of more cubic inches displacment and compression ratio. It will be about 42% faster in every gear as an A is governed at 1400 RPMs, the 240 engine is governed at 2000 RPMs wide open. You will have the fastest A in the neighborhood so be careful.

Interesting point about the engine speed.

I know with my 113 super a, even in 1st gear throttled down all the way, you're moving at a pretty good clip for plowing - at least in very rocky soil like I've got. Wonder what the rpms are when the 123 is throttled down?...

As for power, yes you'll have enough (assuming average soil). But plowing is much more about traction than power.

You need to transfer that power to the ground.

You're wheels spinning is much more likely to be a problem than your engine stalling out.

At a minimum, you'll want front and rear wheel weights. And very good rear tires - keep the pressure low.

Whether or not it's the right setup for the job really depends on how much you're plowing. If you're getting into a 2 bottom to cut your plowing time down, the area's large enough to be stretching the capabilities of the A.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew I could get some good info from here. I don't have a large area to plow, basically two large gardens. The problem is that my A doesn't have any lift system and I can't find an orignal style plow with a lifting system. I'll keep an eye out for a single bottom, but I know where to get a 2 bottom little genius. Thanks again to everyone for the info.

Not related to horsepower, but, since you have the F240 engine, why don't you also install the hydraulic pump from the 240, mount a resovoir and valve, and then you will also have hydraulics on your A.

The 240 ran many more RPMs. The one i had ran pto speed before it was at full RPMs according to the tach. You must also remember the 240 had better tires and wt for traction. You will need good 9.5 with probably two wts per wheel if you are going to do much plowing. Dont go with larger tires as that will cut your power too much as wt is the thing for the B when plowing. The B had very high ratings at the Nebraska tests but had wheel wts and if i remember weighed in at like 3200. I have pulled 2-12 with the B and power is no problem but traction is.
