484 Pto squeels when engaged

I have an 484 that when the PTO is engaged there is a hi pitch squeel in the transmition. It sounds like an internal leak. Hydraulics work good but there seems to be a lot of heat from the transmition. The flow to the cooler up front seems to be very little.

Sounds like you have several issues to resolve. Start with the simplest things first: make sure cooler is getting adequate airflow, check oil flow to and through cooler, then after you have potential cooler issues dealt with the pto problem. Not sure about how the engagement works on that model, there could be a leak somewhere in that circuit. Does the pto work at all or does it stop when a load is applied? Does the noise only occur on engagement or does it persist?

Thanks for the reply, There seems to be little flow to the cooler. I flushed the lines and cooler. No obstructions. If I remember right, when the noise with the PTO started, I started to notice the heat under the seat from the transmition. The PTO works all the time. I use a 10 ft. mower and there is no slippage. The noise is there all the time the PTO is engaged. It gets louder as the RPM's go up. It may also be there without the pto engaged, but no where near as bad. Thanks

It doesn't sound like the clutches are slipping. Without a service manual that is about all I can tell you. Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Hi Bill, is the mower 540 RPM (large PTO shaft splines) or 1000 RPM (small PTO shaft splines)?
Does you 484 have remote hydraulic outlets at the rear of tractor? If so pull the remote hydraulic lever with nothing connected to the outlets, this should make the hydraulic relief valve squeal in the MCV valve under your left foot rest. Is this the same sound you hear when PTO is engaged?

Hi jimb2, I went out to the shop and did what you asked. The sound that I get when the remote hydraulic outlet is actuated with nothing hooked to them is a lot less intense. The noise I am getting when the PTO is engaged is more of a high pitched noise. The tractor has 540 PTO. Thanks Bill

I have a 385 so I think the tranny and rear are the same as yours, after I changed all the fliuds I had a noise as you describe. I check the fluid again and added a bit and the noise went away and has never been back. I was wondering if it was air in the system and it made the noise until it bled off. Because it reminded me of cavitation.

Bill, do as another post said make sure there is plenty of Hytran in transmission. Dipstick is by left heel. Is does not hurt to overfill by 5 gal.
I have attached the 484 PTO parts from CaseIH.com, as you can see from parts picture, the 1000 RPM shaft is the driving shaft from the PTO clutch and the 540 shaft runs off the 1000 shaft. The PTO clutch can be accessed by removing access cover under right foot rest but I believe you have to drain Hytran from transmission.
So there are a couple bearings at rear of tractor under the PTO shield that you can check the one at 540 shaft and the other on 1000 shaft. If you have access to a mechanics stethoscope or use the old mechanics trick with an old broom stick held next the bearing and the other end being held to your ear and listen for bearing squeal.
BE VERY CAREFUL not to get tangled up with PTO shaft.
