Most of my head studs are in bad shape. I can't find a source for replacement, including IH. Anybody know where to get them?

The IH number is 46242DA. Thanks.

Try Bates Corporation in Bourbon Indiana, 800-248-2955
or
Rock Valley Tractor parts in Rock Valley, Iowa. 712-476-5301.

A good, knowledgeable parts person at an auto parts store should have a catalog with various stud sizes, and should be able to match (or at least come close enough.) There or a hot rod/ engine builder's shop. -Andy

I just carried a 400D engine block out the door to the junk pile yesterday that had water in it and it got hard and guess what happens. It broke so its junk. The head bolt studs are still in it. My e-mail is open if I can be any help. charlie

What I would be inclined to do is just buy new grade 8 fine threaded bolts, cut off the heads and thread the end so they can be screwed into the block, but then I have a lathe that can cut threads. I just finished rebuilding a 1929 Farmall Regular and after breaking several of the original head studs, I just made all new ones out of grade 8 bolts and threaded the ends on my lathe.

Try ARP (Automotive Racing Products). They're known for their racing stuff but apparently before that they made parts for the military and still do. They may have something that would work.

I have taken your suggestion (basically) and went to Murphy's in Hallsville, Mo. They have ARP studs for the head. These are 6.125" long, 1/2"x13 on one end, and 1/2"x20 on the other. Thread lengths for both are 1.225". $156 plus shipping, just in case anyone is interested.

Shop told me they had a difficult time with the old ones, and got them red hot, then removed them.

FYI: here's a picture of the tractor as of today:

Notice I removed the wide front and went with a tricycle front. When the engine is done, I will split it again to install it.
