Farmall H cam

I replaced my old H cam with a used one including a used gear. The replacement gear has two dots on it. One is heavier than the other. When the heavier one is lined up with the crankshaft dot, the lighter dot lines up with the idler gear. The number one journal on the crank in this configuration, is laying horizontally. Should I be aliging the big dot with the crank, or the little one?

Mesh the single marked tooth on the crankshaft gear between the two marked teeth on the camshaft gear; then mesh the single mark tooth
on the camshaft gear between the two marked teeth on the magneto gear.

The governor gear and idler gear doesn't need to be timed with engine. Hal

How are you going to get the mag in registration if all the marks arent lined up. With a dist there would be no problem but the mag on an old H thats another story.

What I described from the manual will get the gears in register. When the engine is assembled and bring No1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke & look to see where the rotor is pointing. If it's off the No1 plug tower pull the mag and rotate the rotor so it's at the
No1 plug tower. Then reinstall. Hal

I didn't make myself clear. The H has a distributor not magneto. The two teeth with dots are about 20 teeth apart. One is a heavy dot, the other is a lighter mark. When the reference points are aligned, Should the number one piston be at top dead center, or coming up on the compression stroke?

Put the # 1 piston on TDC. Then look at the cam lobes.#1 should be pointing down & #4 should be up. Use whichever dot lines up.
