Delco 6V Generator Inside Wiring

I"m tinkering with a 6V Delco generator off my B. It has the 3 brushes. One of the fixed brushes has a lead that goes to the end housing (ground). My issue is, 2 other leads, 2 other brushes. Not sure which belongs where. The way it appeared to be hooked up was the movable brush lead went to the field coils, and the fixed brush lead went to the A terminal on the inside of the housing. All I know is with it hooked up like that, it won"t put anything out. Still has a cut out relay, the cutout battery post does have 6V to it. The other post on the cutout goes to the A post on the outside of the generator. The field post on the generator goes to the resistor on the light switch. I thought about swapping the two leads on those two brushes, not sure what damage I may do.

Not to do that would be best.
The way you are stating is correct (movable to field. Fixed to A terminal. With it running grounding the F terminal (wires on is OK) to the frame of the tractor should make it put out full charge. Jim

Jims right that youre right,,,The armatures output is across the two fixed brushes that are 180 opposite, ones grounded the other leads to the ARM post, the Filed current (and resulting genny output) can be regulated by movement of the third brush (wires to first of the 2 series field windings), closer to the main the more current, farther away the less.

The dead grounding of the Field post by passes anY light switch etc problems and as Jim notes that makes her full charge so if she dont charge then I suspect a bad genny (still may be other causes) The troubleshooting he posted (try the motor test also) ought to help diagnose the problem but often the light switch may be inoperable or not be well grounded

Thanks for that great information! I grounded the field terminal on the generator, and it started charging. I"m going to have to check the light switch now for proper ground, etc.
While it was running, I had a voltmeter on it, and was also watching the amp gauge. It showed charging until I turned on the headlights. Then went to discharge. I moved the one brush closer to the other one and farther away too. Still can"t keep up. My clamp on ammeter isn"t here, so I can"t see how much it is actually putting out. My thinking is the new brushes haven"t become well acquainted with the armature yet, maybe when the contact is better, the output will be too?
