(quoted from post at 22:41:13 01/24/12) Will the pressure plate come out the bottom of an H or am I going to have to split the tractor?

The short answer is; it depends.

The explanation is; it will if it has the 10 inch clutch, but if it has the 10 1/2 inch clutch, it will not. Which begs the question: Which one does it have? That depends on the year model and if no one "upgraded" it during its lifetime, (not very likely, but still possible if the engine was changed out. Do numbers on block and frame match?) The serial number should reveal all. If it is from 501 to 391357, you are in luck. If higher than that, start rounding up some cribbing timbers ...

I don't have a clue as to what the serial numbe is. In 1948 the tractor was in a shed fire and the tag burned off. I was told it is a 1943 model but I can not verify that. I didn't know there was two clutch sizes. I will have to measure it. The belly pump is already out. I was changing that and putting seals in the front of the transmission when I saw the pressure plate had one finger flopping around.

You probably don't. s/n 391357 was in the VERY late part of 1953 so chances are you are ok. You could check the s/n on the motor. That COULDN'T burn off because it is stamped in the block. Somebody smarter can tell you where it is on an H. IIRC it is behind the mag/dist??? On a diesel is it above the inj pump.

You can read the casting codes on your tractor and they will tell you when the parts were made. This will put you pretty close on what year the tractor is.

Year Starting Serial Number
1939 501
1940 10653
1941 52387
1942 93237
1943 122091
1944 150251
1945 186123
1946 214820
1947 241143
1948 268991
1949 300876
1950 327975
1951 351923
1952 375861
1953 390500

Thanks for the info guys. I was looking at the parts here on the YT site and it shows a 9", 10" and a 10 1/2". We will see when I get it apart.

I was able to change the clutch and pressure plate on my Stage II Super H through the bottom. It has the 10-1/2" clutch.

The job wasn't easy, but I had no issues getting the clutch or pressure plate out of the belly of the tractor without splitting.

Exactly. Once that belly pump is out of the way, there is a BIG hole in the bottom. I just recently did a clutch and pressure plate replacement on my 1940 M without splitting, and I know folks who have done the thing on a Super M.
