H 12 volt conversion

I was thinking about converting to 12 volts, but read somewhere that a hole had to be cut in the sheet metal in order for the alternator to fit. Is this true? I was thinking about getting the kit sold through this site. Any recommendations or comments?

It depends on what you use for a mounting bracket. I thought the GM alternator I have would never fit under the hood, but it does.

it is darn tight under there. I doubt a gm delco 10si will fit.. a cs130 might.. or a lil hitachi..

I have a 12v gen on mine, and the oem regulator is less than a half inch from the hood..

good luck

I have a delco 10si on my H and it fits, but it is tight. On the advice of YT folks I put a piece of rubber about 1/4" thick between the alt and the valve cover to keep them from rubbing each other. Picture is from when I was originally asking about it a couple of years ago when my H was new to me. The alt in the picture was what came on my tractor, it was okay having the terminals up but to me they seem to work best pointing down at the long mounting tube, if you get one that is oriented to the side you'll just need to pull the four long screws and turn the back half to the desired position. There just is not room for the wires between the hood and the alternator. I just got through re-wiring my H following the Bob M/Janicholson wiring diagrams that are on this forum, and now my tractor is happy.

I used a Hitachi alternator #14231. With this alternator you flip the bottom generator bracket upside down, and mount the alternator on it with a piece of all-thread. By doing this the alternator will fit with no modifications to the hood. The pulley that comes with the alternator will need to have a washer installed between the two halves as well.

The way I put 10si on H, is I took the factory generator bracket off engine turn it over and bolted it back on, then I use althread to line up the alternator pulley up with motor pulleys. Fit fine under hood. If I still had the H, I would take pictures for you.
I can't remember if I use the generator adjustment arm, or made one to fit. I won't cut any sheet medal!!!

I have been selling a kit for converting Farmall H to 12 volts and I have been using the Delco 10SI or 12SI alternator for years. It fits, Yes it's tight, but simple. I have designed a nicelooking, strong mounting bracket. My kit still uses the origional generator belt. These pictures just happen to be from a I-300 tractor, for more pictures check out my web site charliesrepair.com Someday, I will design a "good" mounting bracket to fit the Hitachi that does not use a piece of 5/16 allthread rod.

You could take your stock generator to a auto electric shop and have it converted to 12 volt, you'll keep the stock look with the benifits of the 12 volt system and you wouldnt have to worry about clearence issues...

The 10SI will fit just fine. The key is getting the bottom of the alternator out far enough to allow the top to lean in and still provide room for belt tensioning.

Hey Charlie! Can a fellow buy just the two brackets like in the first picture? I have everything else already.

Coppertown Bob, Yes, you can get the two brackets, I would also suggest a pulley that goes with the kit. To make things fit correctly you will also need the pulley that I designed my system around. My e-mail is open or call 507 438 8172 charlie

I'm in the middle of converting my SH to 12v alt.will post pics later.Did the SM 5 years ago, works great!!Steve
