Oil Reservoir Question

I have a 1941 Farmall A. When I open the oil reservoir above the PTO and the reservoir near the gear shift above the left/exaust side axle, how much oil should i see in there?

Also, is there a way to drain that oil and put new oil in?

Practically none.

The A's use a suprisingly small amount of oil back there. Basically just enough for the bottoms of the transmission gears to touch

... wish I could remember the exact spec - but it's only about 5 quarts.

It's such a small amount it's worth just draining it and refilling just to be sure you've got the right amount.

Put too much in and it'll start dripping out past the seals (most likely -unless you put new ones on recently)

You can flush it with kerosene too while you're at it - drain it - put in a gallon or two of kerosene - drive around a bit - drain - then fill with gear oil.

I'm sure somebody here can tell you what the exact number of quarts you need.

Oh - missed one of your questions - yes there is at least one drain plug (I think two)

Should be a square drive, just like the filler plugs - found at the bottom of the trans and pto.

The pto and trans share oil - no need to fill each separately.

awesome thanks. i was able to change the trans fluid and oil. mission accomplished! the old tranny fluid smelled bad, looked like peanut butter and flowed really slow even after running the engine a while.

Excellent. The gears will appreciate it.

The old stuff may have been very thick on purpose.

Some people go real heavy for a few reasons - less leaks - less noise - more drag, so less time waiting to shift into reverse, etc.

If it was discolored - that probably means water got in there - can be condensation, but those shift lever's aren't sealed too well. Just another reason they should be stored inside. Good that you changed it.

i was wondering if the color was because of water. a friend of mine mentioned that. i followed the owners manual and put SAE 90 back in. does that sound right? and I always keep it in my barn out of the weather.
